Hi Guys

I have been lurking in the background for a while on here and decided to pay my membership today as 15 bucks is a great deal for what you learn on here and the great stories.

Yesterday I had to do a trip up to yorkshire for work to visit some farms and managed to get the most miles from a tank that I have ever had. Got a 99 non turbo forester, which is totally stock now as I have taken the roof rack and all terrains off it for the time being.

When it was stock before I would get 320 ish miles (514km), but gave it a birthday last week with an oil/ filter change, plugs, gearbox oil, new back box and checked tyre pressures and then on this trip got 407 miles. It worked out to be 407 miles (655km) on 50.5 litres, so 35mpg or almost 13km/l.

I thought that was amazing for my car having never been close to this.

What is anyone else getting?

Here are a few pics of my car - the ones with the roof rack on are from when I picked it up and had it ratchet strapped on- now clamped to roof bars. It was from a Renault Kangoo van and it just the right size + cheap.

According to my records, my best mileage on a tank of fuel was on 3rd Jan 2009... I was coming back to Melbourne from Sydney and got 598kms out of 1 tank of fuel. Refueling it to the top took 53.5 litres, which equals 8.9l/100kms, or 11.2 km/l.

Not bad for a 2.5l turbo...

My WRX is useless and with the different gearing the odometer is about as accurate as a $2 watch, I doubt I'm getting 400Kl on a good day but my 98 V3 STI powered Liberty'Legacy gets around 560-580 around town giving it a fair bit of grief and I did 732Kl and put from memory 57.2L in it after a long country run averaging about 130kph, bloody thing is a freak for a flat 13sec car. Got to love the standard Japanese computer.

That's pretty good for a car that's only rated 26-28 on the highway! In the next couple weeks i'll be doing most of those things to get it ready for our trip in November. I'll be curious to see if i get any improvements like you saw! Right now i am getting around 320 to mostly full tank. However, alot of my driving is stop and go going from my house to work. Tons of stop signs make for a 10 minute drive to go 2 miles.

I have got a smaller engine, mine is the 2 litre. Be interested to see if I can repeat it. Got a big trip next week, so will soon see.

Just had a thought. To complicate things a bit US gallons are different to our imperial gallons. 1.2 US gallons to 1 imperial gallon.

That would make my 35mpg about 29 mpg.

This is my 2nd forester, last one identical except silver and more miles on the clock. Last one the best I had was 340 on a tank, which is why I was so surprised when it ticked over 400

No, 2 litre non turbo petrol with 95,000 miles, so about 150,000 km

Ahhh, that makes sense. My head was spinning around that 35mpg! Especially since my wifes Corolla gets 38-40.

07 Forester XT manual 601km on 53L (8.8L/100km) on easy running within the law and including a return trip across Brisbane. It left very little in the tank because when it did run dry once it would only take 55.2L to overflowing. So much for Subaru's 60L claim. The best I've done is 7.9L/100km and so far I've averaged 9.6L/100km over the 181,000km life of the car. Subaru claims the 07 XT has an overall of 11.4L/100km. That's more like my city running figure.

And that's why we all love the metric system, hehehe :iconwink:

Wow you guys are getting great mileage from the turbo engines. I am on an eco run at the moment, I have never been able to finish it for a whole tank before

Usually when going hard around town, like foot planeted heaps and gear changing near redline I get about 500km from the tank.
So far done 30km with this new tank using Octane 95 and I am going to run the foz dry (about 58ish L).

This is from a 2.0 N/A manual (1.4tonne Forester). I am aiming for 650-700 from about 55l. I know I can get easily 8L per 100 km just by driving economically. Also the best I hav managed from half a tank was 400km on the highway sitting on 109km/hr with cruise control on.

Ill let you know how mine goes BarnBoy, I have the same foz with the same engine. Except im running bigger tyres, roof racks and lift so min will be slightly worse.

Gotta say metric everything would be far easier. Funny really, i am 31, was taught metric at school but as some stuff is still imperial we use both.

I still do road distance in miles and if I catch a fish I would weigh it in pounds to compare with others ( no one does fish in kgs), but everything else is metric. So as everyone still talks about miles per gallon, I have to convert my fuel I bought in litres, into gallons before I can work it out.... Makes a lot of sense huh!

Have had in excess of 800km from a tank in my 05 Model manual Outback on a Melb - Adelaide run, 2 years ago.
I work out consumption based on filling and comparing with trip metre. The multi gauge gives 'bs' figures in my experience.
My tank is 64 litres.

Taza, no need to run it dry, it's a 60L tank so provided you fill it to the top and re set the odometer then do 3-400kl, re fill & check litres against odo you'll get a pretty accurate reading but you must also remember you are running bigger tyres so maybe 5% more than you think

Im still keen to see what I can actually get out a tank though. I usually get 500ish around town when the fuel light comes on then when I fuel up it only fuels 48ish Litres. And the lights ment to come on when there is 9L left and its suppose to be a 60L tank :confused: So im keen to test.....
The most I have ever fueled up though was 57L and the gauge was just below the bottom of the the E (for Empty) mark.

Also so far on my economy run with octane 95 I have gotten 110km and the gauge has just moved off the Full mark

That is good going for your Outback! What size engine is it?

I did that trip in February from Adelaide and then along the Great Ocean Road, had a great time (if you got good fuel consumption I am guessing you took the direct route). Hope to make it back to Australia in a few years. We stopped at Robe for a night and I really wanted to drive on the beach there, but I don't think our little Hyundai hire car would have apreciated it much.
