EJ 4.11 with 1.59

Exactly!
Ive had a SF Forester box that's open sitting on my bench at work for 6 months. Thus it has a blown reverse, 1st and 2nd gear.
I did notice that it looks almost identical to the L-Series box. Even turbo boxes are very similar minus the dual range section on the input shaft. From what I've read the 5 speed wrx boxes have the same gears as aN/A box except for 1st gear which is ~30% stronger.

My biggest issue with the box in my foz is the 5th gear. Due to it being designed for a 2.0l and now having a 2.5 I find it's over revving at 100+km/hr. At 100 its doing 2950rpm. It does pull like a weapon though.

The 5th gear seems to be weak on the 1st gen wrx impreza but a mechanic told me it was the fact that the drivers kept their hand on the stick that makes them heat and then "explode"….don't leave your hand on the stick :iconwink:

Sure did. Only time I don't like it is when towing you have to use 4th much more often, which probably isn't a bad thing.

Become a lot better on fuel too.

I am currently in the process of installing my L series gear set. I am up to the stage where I need to work out how to make it clear the diff. I have been following Phizinza's write up fairly closely so far.

I am some what concerned with the suggestion to machine the outside off the syncho ring to make it clear the diff. I would have thought that this is likely to make it significantly weaker and with my enthusiastic offroad driving style I might break it.

As I am planing to install 4.44 diffs I might have to do this anyway but would like to know if it is a bad idea before I go ahead.

Has anyone who has done this conversion this way had any issues with it?

I would also love to hear any stories of successful conversions that have not had any issue and how "well" they have been tested.

That might give you the idea you need. Unfortunately I can't see the pics, I really hope they're still there as they make up a good part of the how to story...

Cheers

This is the way I did it, by machining the outside of the synchro ring, this metal ring is really very hard but it worked out ok. As it is only used to change gears between low and high, there is nearly no stress on it.

My conversion has no issues so far but i'm not a "Taza" driver...

Thanks, I had not seen that one. Its step 4 in the process that I am worried about in terms of strength....

Good to hear it is still working for you. I would say I am somewhere between you and Taza in terms of driving but certainly not a Taza.

I do think there would still be quite a bit of stress on that component though....

Well I'm working on this too now. Should have a sleeve sorted thanks to Dedman! Machining 4mm off the synchro sleeve should be possible on the dodgy, old lathe at work. We'll see how that plays out.
I've sourced a 04 SG Foz box to through it in along with some other goodies. I'm looking forward to the better matched gearing. The more and more I drive it the more the rubbish SF gearing annoys me.

Depending how rough my lathe job is should determine a goos percentage of the strength.

Have you finished the mods, is the box back in the Foz ?

Not even close. Still trying to find a DCCD box at a good price which is not going well.
I bought a box to put all my new parts in so I wouldn't put my car out of action whilst I was doing the mods though

Thought about a loan from mum and dad to pick up Hydrowill's gearbox and rear diff setup? In my opinion it's a well priced package ;)

Certainly worth a look. I know mine is going to be worth much more than what my Brumby is worth. However I've been collecting parts for 18months~ for the gearbox.

I did look in to buying this box but the reason I originally decided to build a box was that I needed better low range. As Hydrowill's box is only the same as what I have currently its really not what I am after. Plus I also very much enjoy the satisfaction of doing all of my mods myself.
