i'll ask but the 225/60r17 are the same width. my stock tyres are 225/55r17.

Don't worry about the boys in blue so much ...

BUT be very afraid of voiding your insurance.

I recently asked my insurer about oversize diameter tyres and they had no problems with that (215x60 16 to 215x65 16), even though it is illegal to fit this size to my car. But as soon as I mentioned over width tyres they told me flatly that it would void my policy (215x60 16 to 225x60 16), even though it is legal to fit this size tyre to my car.

Can you afford to cover to cover the entire cost of your car, AND someone else's (you also void your TPPD clause of your comprehensive insurance policy ... )?

That other car could well be worth $100-400K ...

Think about it!

From what I'm led to believe, you are allowed +/- 15mm of what's on the tyre placement card that's on the inside of your driver door.
This link might help. Even though it's a little old, I'm fairly sure that the same laws still apply (someone please correct me if I'm wrong though)
I should've added that the +/- 15mm refers to the diameter.

i'll ask but the 225/60r17 are the same width. my stock tyres are 225/55r17.
The 225/55r17 are 679mm
The 225/60r17 are 702mm

So therefore +23mm.

This would mean that you are actually 8mm too big / over whats legal.

Hope this helps & explains what I was saying a little better.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Same principle as me going to either 225/60 16 or 215/65 16. One voids my insurance, the other is illegal (not a sick bird ... ), and therefore also voids my insurance, as Mr T has rightly informed you.
For me, the only way to get a more aggressive tyre would have been to drop the rim size to 15" and go for a LT tyre in that size. Big bucks ...

In the end, I decided I wasn't prepared to make even the slightest sacrifice of on road safety, handling, steering and braking for perhaps a marginal gain in off road performance.

I think I will rely on my wits, and use my car within its limits.

Biesel, if you want to stay legal and keep the insurance company happy, your best (only?) option would be to go for the narrower 215/60R17s. I'm not going to be looking at an upgrade for a few months but I might just give my insurance company a call to see what they say... I've got to call them anyway and tell them that I've installed a Subaxtreme sump guard... hopefully that won't void the policy.

for anyone interested, 225/60r17 fit perfectly in spare tyre well. looks like 235/60r17 would fit fine as well.

Damn looks like I'm going with the 215/60/16 Geolander A/T-S then. It would've helped my speedo as well, as it reads 10% faster than actual speed. Where is a good place near canberra/sydney to get them?

Couldnt quite find it but i looking at a set of Geo AT-S asweel and was wondering if a 235/60/16 would with on an sh9 forester without scrubbing? The reason for this size is it is the largest diametre i can fo from stock 225/55/17.

EDIT: Should also ad i think the rim is 16x6.5. will the rim width make a difference?
