What's your weapon of choice?

in non rural areas I don't understand the need for them

Depends on how you define "need." For sporting purposes, I would agree with you, there's not much sport shooting to be done in town. But for self-defense, compare a neighborhood in Detroit with a high crime rate to a small town in Colorado where people don't even lock their doors at night.

The US culture is quite different to much of Oz- so it is hard for me to appreciate what happens there. There are certain parts of Sydney I would prefer not to visit- but are they as bad Detroit? I don't know. In my 40 plus years I have had no need for a gun, and I know people doouble my age who could say the same thing. But has general gun ownership- the highest rate in the world-provide better safety? I don't know that either. But it would want to because the number of times we hear of another school shooting in the US makes me unsure.

Of course not, but I can't choose whether the whole country has guns, only whether or not I have one. And as long as we have all those guns, you either own one yourself or you're at the mercy of someone who does.

Come on guys, Detroit is not that bad............

Fine, Detroit is so hardcore our mayor is in jail

Detroit, where the weak are killed and eaten.

Enough joking though, there are areas of the city that I will simply not go to at certain times unless I am carrying (yes, I carry legally) it is easy to say to just avoid those areas but sometimes they are unavoidable (around the Masonic temple for instance)

Back in the late 80s, my dad (a retired state cop) went to Detroit with his cop buddies for a police convention, or something. They checked into their hotel and headed out to find a bar, and the doorman says to them "Where are you guys going at night? Are you crazy?!"
They tell him, "It's cool, we're cops," to which he replies "It doesn't matter. They aren't going to give you time to flash a badge, they'll just shoot you and take your wallet."

I seem to remember reading somewhere that in one particular state in the U.S (not sure which state) that they made it law that everyone that lived there had to carry a gun. Apparently the crime rate dropped dramatically once this law was passed. At a guess, this was due to knowing that no matter who got picked on, robbed etc, everyone that lived there new what they were getting themselves into if they decided to break the law.

Actually I think I saw it on an episode of Dr Phil.

All I can say is "it's a very strange & dangerous world that we live in at times"

Mr Turbo

I met a Texan a couple of years ago who was most upset that he wasn't allowed to carry a concealed weapon. He blamed the lawmakers in Austin, which he considered a decadent city (he was from Dallas).

I actually spent 4 weeks working in Austin a couple of years ago and found amusing signs at service stations and liquor shops (often the same thing) disallowing people within xxx yards of their premises carrying a firearm. Our work office was the same.

For general woods use.....hiking.....hunting....whatever......

It is hard to beat a 30-30 levergun.......

They carry very well.....provide enough power for just about anything.....and have low recoil.......and fast follow-up shots if needed.....

$0.02 deposited:biggrin:

Ah, the sound of a .50 cal machine gun..... You just know they mean business..

my fav is the old .303 and 410. cant beat the .303 for power and accuracy at a modest cost. :bananagunner:
when we were younger we used to go camping out bush and take friendly rabbit traps, catch the rabbits, wait until night cut open a glow stick and pour the glow liquid on the rabbits and do a bit of night shooting. ahhh the things you did when your young and stupid.

haha.... Oh wow. :S

Against bears? One well placed shot from a bolt action high powered rifle could be all you would need...however, opening up on a bear with a 9mm would quite likely be fatal (to you) mistake.

When my folks and I used to go up into the hills in Idaho picking huckleberries, we always carried 12ga shotguns with slugs. Bears love huckleberries as much as humans do, so its likely you'd run across one when you'd be up picking. Most of the time if you stay calm they'll just leave you alone, but every now and then they don't, and then its like you Forrester attacking you (not so much with the blackies, but we had grizzlies as well). And when that happens, nothing says **** off! like a hand-held howitzer.

Kind of hard to argue a bolt action as being "self defense"

Personally I carry a .45 cal Glock or a 9mm Sig Sauer

Don't even get me started on the folks who want to disarm the citizens of this country! :eviltoyou:

yeah, im licenced in qld for cat a and b weapons. my weapon of choice is the ol mosin-nagant m91. love it. good, hard hitting bolt that wont die.

I have an m44 (surplus gun at gander for 120 bucks, why not?), that thing is a beast.

I also have a hipoint 9mm carbine with red dot sight for plinking/defense; accurate up to 100 yards.

Both are fun, cheap guns, but sadly gun laws are getting more stringent making people freak out about guns, even if I'm at the gun club. Carrying one in the back of you car here is legal, but people will almost always call the cops, then the cops have to investigate, its not worth it to carry round aimlessly, you are just asking for trouble.

But on a brighter note, I love shooting and no one is taking my guns...ever...

Here in the UK we have no handgun ownership, very few people own Rifle type stuff (I am not knowledgeable about this subject at all), there are loads of shotguns in private ownership, mainly used for clay-shooting at gun clubs. I think 'we' link the US gun based mortality rate of 30,000 people dead a year with less stringent gun control...compared to the UK figure of 42 in 2008..I believe the USA has 5 times the population ?
Lights the blue touch paper and stands back....:iconwink:
