This winter, I plan on doing some camping in the National Forest up the road. There are bears (and the occasional panther) in those woods, so I will be bringing a personal defense weapon with me. Probably my old Mosin-Nagant bolt action.
Just out of curiosity, how many people here carry a weapon with them into the wilderness? And of those who do what is it?

Fly Spray

(we can't carry weapons down-under and even if licenced can't take them into National Parks anyway)

I have a Colt .380 Gov't Model that is small enough to easily carry w/o being a nuisance like my Colt .375 King Cobra. I typically keep Hydrashocks in it. For snakes and such ;)

Not sure I'd consider a rifle a "personal defense weapon" myself :)

I walk with a cane, so I got the snakes covered. But a bear? Give me a high powered rifle, at least until we get Subaextreme-style bullbars here in the US. Then I'll just let the Subie kick his arse.

PS- nice Unforgiven reference.

Kind of hard to argue a bolt action as being "self defense"

Personally I carry a .45 cal Glock or a 9mm Sig Sauer

Oh yeah, absolutely. I have a .40S&W Steyr S40 for CC. But since this is an off-road site, I was thinking more along the lines of wilderness "truck gun."

Hmm... store your food away from your campsite in a bear-safe container, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Done some camping in areas with bears but never felt the need for a weapon (and being a tourist I didnt have access to one)
Just keep your food out of the way.
When hiking make a bit of noise (bell) so you dont surprise them. Would you carry the rifle while hiking?

I did have a large bear wander thru my camp site once in Alaska. Tame enough that people didnt worry him, not that tame that he didnt worry the people!

They wont eat you - so unless you do something to annoy/scare them you should be ok.

I got a bad knee from a bike wreck, so hiking really isn't an issue for me. I basically want to keep a rifle in the truck under the "better to have it and not need it than vice versa" philosophy. And here in the US carrying an old bolt action rifle in the back isn't that big of a deal.

I don't shoot it anymore but I always thought it was cool.

Hm, yours is a bit different, what model? Mine is a 1913.

Longer barrel, different windage tray and no checkering on the side (I do have a bayonet though)

Peaty's looks like a sporterized Number 4 Mk1 made after 1942. The stock is completely different than what it had when made. A 1913 model would be a Number 1 Mk3 or Mk3* Totaly different looking rifles, though both came as 303 British caliber. There are a bunch of Number 4 rifles rechambered for 7.62 NATO (308 Winchester).

The 30-06 Enfields are called the P17 (based on the British P13 Enfield which was a smaller caliber). Enfield designed, built in the USA for our troops in WW1. I have my grandfather's P17.

When you say Moisin-Nagant, you mean the M43/44 carbine, or the full length rifle? Damed things are accurate as hell, but the carbine (same action, same ammo, just shorter and has the side folding bayonet) is so much more handy.

Personally, I usually carry an M1911A1 45 Auto when hiking or camping. Sometimes the above mentioned carbine in the car or truck. Unless I'm reenacting. Then its a 50 cal Pennsylvania (Lancaster County style) long rifle, or a short pattern Brown Bess musket, both with tomahawk and long knife (gots to protect us from the damned French Indians ;)).
