Dulagarl: the Lifted H6 Forester

Well, I bought it, and I have to say that what SKT has done is truly inspired.

It’s a freaking rocket on the bitumen, and it has an enormous amount of grunt offroad.

Here’s a little log of bring it home, and it’s first offroad trip once home.

Jan 29th I flew to Coolangatta. Scott picked me up at the airport and we went for a drive. It didn’t take long for me to be convinced that I should buy this. Sure, it had a couple of issues, for example some worn out bushes in the front end, and a cooling issue, but I could tell that this was a VERY serious vehicle.

Brought it home via Lismore and Casino and then to Tamworth for the night. Next day was Tamworth to Narrandera. Narrandera to Melbourne on the Minday was relatively easy after all of that.

Saw some amazing country in the process. Didn’t have time for many snaps, but here are a few…

Actually, that virtual solar system drive from siding spring observatory is a good idea. That pic was taken in Gilgandra.

While on the space bent, couldn’t resist a couple of pics with the Parkes Radio Telescope…

It was 38 degrees Celsius when those shots were taken, and it didn’t get cooler for hours. Unsurprisingly, the vehicle got a bit hot just south of Forbes.

A bit further south past West Wyalong, and there was still water around from December. Ridiculously flat country with paddocks turned to lakes…

So, when I got home, I went straight to the mechanic and got an aircon service. I also consulted about improving airflow to the radiator. I looked at pics of offroad bars on Outbacks on the Subaxtreme site, and also the bar on the latest Forester. Armed with that info I decided to cut some holes in the bulbar, and this is the result…

So, I then set up the GPS on the dash with some adhesive Velcro…

and connected the ECU to the laptop to monitor engine performance and temperatures.

Ok cool. I would of thought you'd have more along the lines of 150-160kw at the wheels. Stock they have 180 at the crank with the ez30r, so around 110kw atw.
you'd be loving that increase in torque! The economy is pretty good too for a 6 cylinder.. got a pic of the dyno power?
 
Note there is no such engine as an EZ30R. It's an EZ30D.

Nice work with the exhaust, what a thing of beauty!
 
EZ30D doesn't have variable valve timing and overlap. It came in the 2000-2003 Outbacks while the later EZ30R came in the 03-09 outbacks and libs which was then replaced by the EZ36.
You'll need an exhaust similar in your L-series aye Andrew ;)
 
yes those are the differences between the two types of EZ30 motors, but they are both still called the EZ30D - there is no such subaru engine as EZ30R, there are just two different EZ30D's. People just commonly call the later version that as it's an easy differentiation and most of the later model cars with the later engine happen to be called the 3.0R.

If you mean that thing that appears before what I wrote about the outcome of the dyno run, yes. If you mean something else, no.

Technically correct, however it has come to be known as the R, simply because "R" is a bit easier to say than:
"theonewiththeplasticmanifoldandvariablecamandvariablevalveandoneexhaustportpercylinderinsteadofoneexhaustportperside."
 
The weight you have in the car doesnt affect dyno figures. In fact, with really high HP engines they often put a big fat bloke in the boot to keep traction :rotfl:

Your larger tyres will affect the figures though, changes the driveline ratio.

Main thing is you feel it has more torque and driveabilty :monkeydance:

I wouldn't think a LSD will make any difference to dyno figures. There's no extra loss of power, except perhaps a slight amount for the larger, heavier ones. Any difference would be very small
 
^ thanks. the reason I ask is that I noticed when the front LSD went in, I lost a little acceleration and economy.

Anyway, progress report:

Took vehicle out to lerdederg yesterday. Highway driving there was terrific. It really pulls up hills in 5th gear now.

The thing I am really amazed about is the improvement in cooling. I had eliminated the cooling "problems" some time ago, but it is even better now.

I initially thought my thermostat was stuffed, because of the large difference (up to 35 degrees) between engine coolant temp (ECT) as shown on the VIPEC software, vs the temperature of the thermostat housing as shown on the temperature watchdog. the former could show 95 degrees, and the latter only 60. Bear in mind that the H6 thermostat only fully opens at about 93 - 95 degrees. This was concerning as the fans are set to come on at 97.

Then voila: the thermostat opened. The ECT dropped progressively to 86, and the watchdog temp rose to about 82.

What was really amazing was that once that happened, the thermostat closed again, and we got back to the difference I described before. Better still, the same patter repeated when running the aircon on hills in 5th gear, and intake air temp (IAT) remained within about 6 degrees of ambient temp.

Once I got offroad, and was working hard in low range to go uphill, we got passed 100 degrees ECT and the watchdog was showing around 95, but once we stopped working hard temperatures quickly dropped.

I put this down to two things: 1: the tune means car is more efficient. 2: the really big factor I think is the reduced mass of the headers as compared to the originals. In short, the new headers heat up just as quickly as the old, but being less mass, they dissipate heat more quickly. This in turn reduces the amount of hear rising straight into the block. the reduced mass is because the old headers are three pipes per side, wrapped in mesh, and sealed in a pressed metal boot. the new headers are just three pipes per side.

To compare, when I first got the car it was prone to overheating on the flat on a hot day. Now, on a moderate day, I can run aircon with thermostat closed. I think i will be able to run aircon on a hot day in deep sand going up steep dunes. Can't wait to try it.

Very pleased with the latest mods: more power, more torque, more fuel efficiency and better cooling.

I think you'll find that the your theories on the exhaust is more about the exhaust gas velocity through the exhaust allowing an easier passage out to the back of the vehicle. You've obviously picked a good exhaust builder! I'm guessing he owns the shop, not just a grunt?

Sounds like you're pretty stoked. The sound file you text me didn't work too good, sorry for not replying until now :/

So, I need to get my gearbox sorted so we can go see if we can scratch you pretty exhaust!

Volumetric Efficiency? yeah, that too no doubt. But the mass of the headers really is a big issue.

Yeah, the exhaust builder owns the place with his father, and came highly recommended. They have done a terrific job.

Hurry up and finish the gearbox!
 
Got a hold of some steps from a wrecker. Pretty good condition, although the plastic end bits are a bit brittle. Will have to work out some sort of replacement for those.

Installed them this weekend: very easy job.

Much easier to access the roof basket now, and there are a few other advantages:

  • The old side skirts used to fill with sand and mud: not these.
  • Nice protection of the lower side of doors from gravel etc.
  • Good place to sit my can of beer while sitting under the awning on a rainy night.
 
I was wondering that too as I would like to look at an alternative to the brittle plastic side skirts but I don't want to lose clearance.
 
No, they don't reduce under sill clearance. Good design really.
 
Are they specifically made for the Forester or modified to fit?

Made specifically, they're pretty common on the jdm imports here.
Unlike the jdm foresters, yours has enough clearance that they look great!
