Fan Cut Out Switch

I totally agree a buzzer is a great idea. I did mine before the buzzer I had ordered in the mail had turned up and on the first trip out I bumped the switch with my knee and next thing I knew it was in the red. I would recommend a buzzer over a light as the buzzer really cant be missed as its annoying as all hell.

I spent a little time thinking about this today, The buzzer can be done relatively mess free but would need to make a small control box to put under the dash, does make things a little more difficult. I also wonder what if the ecu would send an error code for the fans being off.

I bumped mine once & the gauge was at "reds" in no time flat.
Luckily I realized in time & no long time damage was done :)

Thats when I added a Missile Toggle Switch Cover like the one NachaLuva is referring to :iconwink:
The buzzer is also a good idea too, but with the music playing :quitar: in my Forry, I probably wouldn't hear it :rolleyessarcastic:

Regards
Mr Turbo

Its a rocker, not sure how I bumped it but now I have a buzzer its all good.

idw, I dont think the ecu on our foresters is that smart, if it send the signal to turn the fans on then it its eyes the fans are on... I certainly dont get a check engine light from it.

I was hoping for a simple way of doing it...I'm a strong believer in Keep It Simple Son (KISS) :iconwink: Dedman how did you do your buzzer?

Thats good but surprising. I've heard others say they do get a CEL & to fix it they put a load on the off position so it still sees a resistance.

Glad no damage, a bit worrying to think it gets in the red so fast! :(

lol

Thats why I was going to have a red LED on the dash as well in line of sight...

I always thought the phrase was Keep It Simple Stupid....:rotfl:
Anyway So I actually did mine differently to what I suggested.... I put a double pole double throw relay in the fuse box and the cut one of the supply leads to each of the fan control relays and connected each set of wires to the common and Normally closed pins on each pole of the relay.
I hooked one of the control pins for the relay that I added to ground and ran the other into the cabin connected to one pin of a switch I also hooked the positive supply for a buzzer to the same pin on the switch (and the negative buzzer lead to ground). Connected the other pin of the switch to positive.

So when the switch is off the relay I added (and the buzzer) is off and the fan circuits are connected normally. When the switch is on the relay (and buzzer) are turned on and the fan relay control circuits are broken, thus fans can not turn on.

I did it this was because I had a relay lying around and only had enough cable to run one wire into the cabin.

Yeah but thats condescending so I dont say that. The only people I call stupid are politicians & boofhead drivers :iconwink::rotfl:

Still trying to understand what you did...

Here is a little diagram I made up quickly. Green blue orange and yellow wires are the control wires for the fan relays (yellow and orange wires would normally be connected in stock wiring)
Im sure not all four of the fan relay control wires come from the ECU but as long as one going to each relay is run through the new relay then all is good. When my relay is off NC1 is connected to A1, NC2 is connected to A2. when relay is on none are connected.

For the cabin switch Pin 2 is normally open (not connected)
Turn fan kill switch on provides power to the buzzer and the new relay. New relay turns on it disconnects both circuits for the fan relays so they cant turn on.

Bit of a ****ty diagram but hope it helps. Took me a while of looking through wiring diagrams to work this out.

Just to be clear the only parts I added is 'Alex's relay' and the stuff in the cabin box. Only changes to stock wiring made are the cutting of yellow and orange wires

Thanks Dedman, I'll try to use that in a "plug n play" so I dont have to cut any wires. Good idea using the normally closed relay

that's pretty much how i was thinking of doing it, nice to see it works before i try

i had some relay piggyback connectors with send and return for each pin, but i can't for the life of me find anywhere to buy them or remember where i got them, might be worth a look NachaLuva for a plug and play harness
