Just bought a Patrol, anyone want my Forester?

Heres a vid. Just put all my little bits of footage end to end with no editing, so its a bit rough, but you get the idea.

Went for a 4wding weekend down to Landcruiser Park and then a small outing to Glasshouse Mountains. Was a heap of fun. Here's a couple of vids:

Here's some photos of the few bruises the old girl got while 4x4ing.

Ripped the flare off the door but glued it back on, haven't got round to smoothing and painting the plastic yet

Gotta love the Kaymar rear bar, keeps taking hits but never dints

And despite the wide offset rims the tyres still scrub up in the inner guard. This will be fixed with much longer shocks and extended bump stops.

I also found myself bellying out way too often and spending a lot of time on the rock sliders so put in some new suspension stuff 3" flexy coils and some extended brake lines at the same time. It has actually come up to 4" in the rear and 3.5" up the front, but this will hopefully settle as the top few skinny coils haven't bound yet.

The extra length of shock the flexy coils will allow me to run. This is my current koni's maxed out, showing how far it missing the mounting point when the coils are on full drop.

And i bought a ARB roof top tent rack secondhand. Now all it needs is the tent to go with it.

Great trip report 2jz929 :)
Looks like you had a fantastic adventure at Cape York :)
Those water crossings & muddy tracks look like they were quite a challenge too :raz:

Regards
Mr Turbo

^ certainly do! Glad it wasn't that deep when I did the Old Telegraph track in 2005! Palm Creek exit south bound was a challenge back then; but it looks like north bound is really bad now too.

Yeah, palm creek was the 'hardest' i guess in that i was one of the few cars to actually drive at that time of the season, but it was not very technical. I say a navara giving it heaps and struggling, so both lockers on and tyres down to 20psi and it went straight up.
Sure as a good trip. Nothing a well set up Subaru with a support vehicle couldn't do, apart from the water probably being a little too deep for a Subie early in the season. The Navara i pulled through Palm Cr was stock standard and drove the whole track bar nolans brook no worries.

Sweet videos!!! Really wish we'd get some diesels over here. The Patrol is lookin' pretty awesome.

Awesome vids & photos...great job. Some of those climbs were pretty full on!

Can someone pls put 2 lockers in my foz!!! :lildevil:

I'd be happy having just one, if they were available.
As for having 2 lockers, now that would be nice.

Comeone guys I know im taking my time and its not my highest priority but my Locker project is coming along. Only issues is that when/if done they will be useless to AWD Subarus unless equipt with DCCD. A rear locker would be useless with the very average stock centre diff. But if that were lockable when you wanted then AWD/viscous LSD for onroad that would be awesome
To have both a locked or DCCD centre diff with rear locker wouild make up for our Subies lack of articulation and make them much much more capable.

Whats a DCCD? What do i have in my '98 foz...i thought it was a viscous diff???

Taza i'm sure while we're all keen for your lockable diff we're happy you take your time & do it right...

DCCD is used in WRX's and STI's. Its basically AWD but lets you determine how much power and torque you want to go between the front and rear wheels. you can pretty much make it almost front wheel drive or lock it by winding it the other way. That is pretty much that same a locking and not road freindly like being in 4WD in a real 4x4. but then you can wind it in the middle and its like the AWD you have now.

You can put DCCD in any AWD Subie.
Your foz is the same as mine with a 4Kg viscous centre lsd. Which is ok for sand, mud, gravel and the likes but not for rock crawling or more hard core challenges.

Im taking my time doing it, being young the rest of my life takes priority but I am also having some ongoing strength issues.

It's still got to be an improvement over an open diff, regardless of what the centre diff will do - usually we get stuck up due to one front and one rear wheel lifting at the same time, thus a rear locker will push us over from this and get you out of that traction issue.

Cheers

Clear as mud! :raspberry:
No seriously i think i understand. But as El Freddo said a rear locker would help overcome some of the traction issues esp as most probs would be while climbing on a lose uneven surface which puts the weight over the rear, hence the value of a rear locker. I will never forget Subaruby so effortlessly climbing a very steep, rutted, loose track in Walhalla with his auto-locker :surprised:

Dont stress Taza

(PS: i hope its the diff having strength issues not you lol :raspberry:)
