El Freddo's Journal.

G'day all,

I got this yesterday:

p2280104.jpg

^ That's how it stood this morning.

This is what I did to it today:

p2280108.jpg

I thought I'd share that for a start as I'm pretty excited about it. As for my subi that I cherish (not as much as you though Kez if you're reading...) the largest contribution to the forum about it was the EJ conversion that it underwent last september.

Here's a pic of Ruby Scoo in the Little Dip NP, Robe, SA:

I'll leave it at that but will share more in the coming weeks as a few projects come to fruitation :) Can't wait but need some parts, hence why I'm not working on them now...

Cheers

Bennie

Ok, so I was a little excited about that biege subi - but its not my daily driver, the blue one in the lower pic is. That's my baby, Ruby Scoo - aka the other one as my better half calls it.

This is how she started out:

(will edit this in when I find the photo, thought I had one handy :s)

Back then she was a $500 special, apparently there was something wrong with the rear end that was going to cost a grand to fix. I'm still running on that rear end. After getting her home we found that the headgaskets were dead :(

No worries, strip it down and replace the headgaskets, get the heads shaved. All good right? Not in this case. The rear cam cover looked like it was melted wax from a burning candle (literallly!). Then we found a cracked cylinder - you can catch your finger nail on it half way down the cylinder, running in parallel to the piston's movements. So I threw that motor away.

I'd heard about an EFI motor that the L series had from factory, so I tracked that down and got one. After getting an EFI EA82 and a computer my steep learning curve began. I needed to get a wiring loom to connect the two, a MAF sensor, o2 sensor and matching exhaust for the o2 sensor to fit in. Bonus of running the EFI motor was the addition of a tacho to the dash, a much better looking dash IMO.

^ After working on her slowly for about a year I finally got her on the road, put some rims on her, added my spotties and my stereo and left it at that for the time being. While nothing but learning how to 4wd in Ruby Scoo was happening, I was behind the scenes rebuilding an MPFI. Nothing serious, just new bearings, shave heads, 40 thou oversized pistons and a general freshen up of the motor. Once that went in she ran very nicely - constantly pulling 10L/100km or better.

My brother and I then went to perth about 9 months after the rebuild. Ruby Scoo missed one beat due to my tinkering. Solid lifters don't work on the MPFI's very well, and one of them broke about 2-3hrs from Ceduna. A 12 hour stop (sleep included) saw our problems sorted with the original hydrolic lifters re-fitted. At this stage our fuel pump was starting to give up, had to hit it to get it going :shake:

^ Bros cleaning parts that I'd left out for him after I finished stripping the motor down to the heads at 2am.

Anyway, we/I had a great time over in WA for our almost two week tour. We went over to have a bbq with some other subi nuts. 40 cars rocked up! Crazy good times had! The fuel pump died a horrible death. Got that sorted then headed home.

cimg1147bk8.jpg

^ The turn out for the cruise/bbq!

On the way home we didn't stop in extreme temps and blew out the side of the radiator, thus killing my newly rebuild motor.

^ The tow home. I can't talk high enough about RACV total care!

I threw in a spare carbed EA82 that ran badly at the best. That
stayed for about 18-20 months before I got my act sorted for an EJ conversion that can be followed in the above link.

Now with the EJ and some other work she looks like this:

p3140270blanked.jpg

Still got a fair bit of work to be done to get her exactly where I want her. Now after going out the other weekend (trip report still coming) and seeing Owen's lifted liberty (sadly no longer) I've got evil plans of a lifted impreza with H6  Sadly I've got to stick with the current project for a little while longer! Should be good once everything is sorted.

Cheers

Bennie

PS: hope the pics are working, half don't show up for me :(

Yep pics are working - thanks. Looks like a great trip apart from the mishaps.

300% agree about RACV Total Care.

If you drive an 'oldie' a problem like yours will make it 'unfixable' if too far from parts.

If you have a modern car (like my Outback) how much of it can be fixed 'on the spot' anyway?

Either way, Total Care 'just makes sense'. If you really can't afford it then you can't afford to drive!

A kinda tribute video to my Subi Ruby Scoo... It could've gone on for longer but I had to stop somewhere and fit some music too.

Cheers

Bennie

PS I'm still yet to dig up the old school pic of her...

Bennie that vid is freak'n awesome! Ruby scoo is a true testament to the awesomeness of subarus everywhere. loved the tunes too mate. two awesome Aussie bands. do you listen to the J's?

Thanks everyone. What can I say, I love making movies like this and have a bit of spare time on my hands at night up here...

Eden, yes I do listen to the J's when I can. At Hotham I've finally found the station frequency that works the best, there's three of them - only problem is that our clock radio doesn't pick up much more than static :( So I really cherish the times in Ruby Scoo with the radio playing.

In other news after about 100mm of rain fell 2 days ago and wiped out a lot of snow :( The good news is that its falling again! This place really is an up and down kinda joint, up when the snow's falling and awesome, down when it starts to meld and a huge downer when you monsoonal (shpelling?) rain for the best part of two days... Also I met Kevin - good to catch up mate! Sorry about the number of phone calls, damn work! Will have to catch up another time!!

Glad you all dig the video, also check out my Jimmy Blaze at Mt hotham one if you haven't already - that was an awesome show to be at!

Cheers

Bennie

Ok so its been a while. Since my last posting I had some sensor issues. Here's a video I made about it only to document the problem:

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLxO4ETlk9c"]YouTube - Sick Ruby Scoo[/ame]

We've had a couple of outing since then. Ruby Going well.

A week before our wedding I went out 4wd'n with Venom. Had a great time before I got a little stuck - shared around on the forums but here's some pics of how it went with the confidence boost before being grounded again:

pb010080rs.jpg

pb010081rs.jpg

pb010083rs.jpg

pb010083rs.jpg

pb010084rs.jpg

In the middle there I completely shat my dacks! The only true time I've hesitated and didn't know what to do - thought Ruby was going to suck in water and I'd be severely stuck in more than one way!

I then did this water race again, got that on video but did the smart thing and covered the low air intake with a tarp to help slow the water movement into the intake.

After completing this I then had a go at a puddle that we passed on the way into this area as my confidence was on a high after the above water race.
This is what it ended up looking like:

pb010091rs.jpg

I got out after I, the driver, was sitting in a puddle, water came in from everywhere. I literally had a fountain from the gear stick boot... Anyway, Ruby was coughing and spluttering at times but still continued to run, even though I was seriously kacking my dacks about inducing water into the EJ - something I didn't want to be dealing with before or after the wedding.
I immediately replaced the airfilter that was seriously, ah, wet! Soon after came new gearbox and diff oils - now running an LSD grade oil which gives a much smoother gear change, most noticeable when the gearbox is cold.

Since then I've done about 2000km, wheel bearings complaining and now a cam belt tensioner thrown its bearings after it was put in the shed for work - good timing!

pc230421rs.jpg

pc230423rs.jpg

Now purchased a US ebay cam belt kit that hopefully arrives next week so I can fit it before the Robe sand 4wd'n trip.

I also got some slim thermo fans - two 7 inch and one 9 inch, the three of these will fit comfortably across the L series radiator and will also clear the EJ with some room to spare. Just can't wait to get all the bits to fit them to Ruby Scoo. I'm especially excited about the thermo fans as I've been looking into something that fits between my 3 core radiator and the EJ22. They're on ebay - tornado is the brand name, come with a 3 year no question warranty, just hope that I haven't been sucked in but worth a go at ~$100.00 including postage

For now Ruby's up on stands halfway in the garage of our rented house waiting on a new seal to replace the wrong one from a bearing kit, plus a CV boot and the cam belt kit... Good times!

And I'd like a snorkel too, for obvious reasons...

Cheers

mate what a great wagon! i enjoyed the vid, may it continue!!

Continue she does. We did a trip out to Little Dip NP out at Robe in South East South Oz with some other subi's and a couple of cruisers. It was a great time and Ruby didn't miss a beat. The thermos held the heat build up down, but not quite as much as I'd hoped.

Thats one amazing wagon. Partly wishing I had an L-Series but I love my Forester.
Love some of the adventures you have had :)

Thanks taza - its funny because I can see the easier potential in the later model subarus but still have a huge soft spot for the L series - I don't know what it is but I can't move on from it!

I've learnt a lot from Ruby Scoo - both mechanically and in the 4wd'n department. Have not been let down when I've needed her most which has been a blessing so far. I'll get caught out one day!

Last week she got some "new" rear springs - donated from a honda civic, early '90's model. The front springs are about the same as an L's rear springs, only thicker, a little small in diametre and have more coils = firmer and taller spring.

Here's a set of poor before and after pics:

With "old" standard replacement king springs:

p3020238rs.jpg

"New" civic springs in the rear:

p3020239rs.jpg

I plan to get some better pics of it on level black top after work tomorrow - if its not raining...

She rides a hell of a lot better and has hopefully eliminated a front end "bounce" that used to occur with some bumps at speed, I think it was the rear compressing as the front was rebounding if that makes sense... Time will tell. A load will also let me know if this is the setup I will settle on as its the primary reason for the swap with the springs.

I've also managed to score a set of the becoming hard to get scorpion 14 inch rims with 27 inch rubber. Just waiting for them to arrive now... *impatiently*
These will be the correct offset and should look the goods on the L. Now I'm wanting to fast track my gearbox build of the L series AWD centre locking diff gearbox with 4.11 ratio diffs. The 4.11's will compensate for the 27 inch tyres, effectively giving me standard gearing as if I still had the 23 inch tyres. The L series "low" low range will be added for best crawl ratio using factory gear so she'll be a great offroader in the end - which is what I'm aiming for...

Cheers

Bennie

Your last comment is why Ruby Scoo is so good Bennie, you know what you want to achieve and you are working towards that objective. You will end up with a great off-road vehicle, one that is still better on-road than the rigid axle big 4X4, relatively economical to run and affordable to build.

Cut down raw footage of an obstacle Ruby Scoo negotiated in the Cobaw SF on easter saturday. We then got Bcoutback's stock 2006 (?) outback through it as well!

Need I say more??
