Lidsdale Trip Jan 2010

Wire is already run. One of them is connected but I ran out of time to connect the second to the battery. Wire is 8ga to each socket and fused at the battery.

I too am thinking of some strategies to get all the way up "that hill".

We'll nail it next time I think mate. :iconwink:

Perhaps I should have given some of the "red-bull" I was drinking to my Forry aswell, instead of just drinking it all myself. :raspberry:

The one we did all the road building on? I was surprised you didn't as you ahve the advantage of an auto (with low range?) and plenty of clearence. From my vantage you didn't appear to be spinning a wheel, it's as if you just ran out of torque.

May I make two suggestions for Kevin...

1) Run Premium unleaded with upper cylinder lubricant/cleaner to increase engine power and;
2) Reduce weight - who knows what you could drop, only you mate but with the interior setup like the tardise (ala Dr Who) I figure there must be something. Heck, I could carry a few things for you for that hill next time :-)

I'd have to say the same thing. I can't remember seeing any wheels spinning either. It just looked as though (like apsilon said) you lost the power/torque that was required, for some unknown reason, to make it to the top.

1. I do - 95 (all the time) and added some injector cleaner about 3 weeks ago and used Subaru upper cylinder cleaner a couple of months ago.

2. No doubt that if I was empty, i.e. a day trip, I would have a better chance.

Fandizzle - good to hear from you... it WAS goooooood! :-)
Looks like you need to come down on a holiday trip next time mate.

Kevin - we were just getting started with all sorts of solutions regarding your engine power concerns on the day weren't we. This discussion of lack of power from your Forester will continue until you drop in a 2nd gearset from an L-series to get a low range. What a PITA that auto boxes don't come with something at least so you could just change the ratio like on a manual one. Heck, Damian could take the dual range box from my old L-series as bolt it up to his Turbo Forester and get the best of both worlds but you're really stuck...

That said, let's face it... your Forry made it up that awesome first option hill climb AND got some way up what was a VERY steep incline.

So what's in the pipeline? You said some sort of engine rebuild while you get another vehicle for touring?

GPS data upload link

Having read Eden's thread recently on how to post GPS waypoints.. here's my effort. I've created a mediafire account (free) and uploaded a gpx file of the waypoints and track data. See how you go.

Happy B'day Eden. :bananatoast:
Can't wait for the repeat/return trip. :quitar:

Happy birthday Eden. We'll see you on the repeat trip coming soon.

thanks guys:) would love a return trip although i need to replace my 2 front struts and the other dodgy drive shaft. i smashed my bank account on my holidays so i need a bit of recovery. would love to catch soon though. i still owe you a drink Alex;)

wow guys looks like an unreal trip! Count me in for the next. I've been working on the north coast for the past 3-4 months so been a bit quiet on the net.

I've done alot of those tracks in the defender, and I can definately vouch for the steepness of those climbs, they are awesome! But it is cheating a bit with diff locks... would be one hell of a ride in the forries! well done!

Well, I've had a minor bingle in the Patrol so once that's fixed (new bullbar, grille and lights) I'll get underway with a reccie. Looking to doing the trip to Mt Walker and Lake Lyell in March I think so doing another go at the Lidsdale/Mt Airly trip could be in April/May.

Oh... and lockers... yeah... my Patrol came with an air locker up front and the rear LSD is as tight as a duck's butt. Makes things soooo much safer, yes, but takes the driving skill out of the equation doesn't it.. :-) I avoid using mine as much as poss. It's only those little bits here and there that I'll flick it on to save my tyres or the track so the lack of wheelspin makes it seem so much less "fun" in some ways.

Can't wait to get back out there... it feels weird driving my 'truck' to and fro with the bullbar and lights all screwed up but the car still being completely drivable.

Yeah I'm keen for mount walker. I've had a look at that last climb to the top, It is STEEP! Roothy actually took the easy route on that DVD!:surprised: The bit he skipped looks insane.

I've only got the auto locker in the rear, nothing in the front at the moment. Eventually I'd like to put an airlocker in the front, but I'm more than happy for now.

If you know the route that Roothy took in the DVD then I'd be interested in knowing which way that was. I haven't done it yet (despite having driven only a couple of minutes away from there a few times) but I can see on my maps that there are two access trails to the peak.

Of course I'll have a look at both ways in the reccie (especially if it means a Subie could do either direction).

When it comes to the lockers issue... well... my tires (33" BFG All terrains) cost around $350 a pop so busting three tyres equals the cost of a locker. Doing hard rocky trails like Mt Walker is an easy way to rip a tyre with wheel spin and it's more dangerous. With the locker on the other hand... the choice is easy. That said, your 'Fender would be excellent with front end wheel travel straight out of the factory and the gearing is much lower than mine too so you'd probably be able to walk it up there just as well... true?
