Champaign Charlie

Now with a name, cargo barrier and a good 'scrub', my 05 manual NA 'Safety' Outback is being prepped for our Cameron Corner trip.

I will use this Journal to record whatever 'tweaks' I think of / implement, what works and what doesn't. Comments and questions welcome along the way.

Right now off to bed - 5.00am start to try and get good AFL Preliminary Finals tickets. "Go the Mighty Magpies!" :iconwink:

Mate,

I reckon the inner diameter of your lift blocks is too small... Have a look at my blocks:

Notice how thin the wall is between 2 threaded holes. On your photo, there seems to be a lot more "meat" in them...

I suggest you send an email out to Brad from Subtle Solutions and ask him what the inner diameter should be, then you can check that and be sure.

I will measure the hole dia on the spring mounts tomorrow and let you know.

Cheers,
Pedro.

Thanks Pedro,

Could you measure the distances between the bolt holes as well please, in case they are the same as mine.

I'll then e-mail Brad.

Cheers,

Barry

Just to close the loop, according to this, the Forester and Outback blocks are completely different... So my previous comments don't really apply.

Pedro.

Now 'fully lifted'

TIRFOR Hand winch!

Have purchased a TIRFOR hand winch, cable and 3 snatch blocks 2nd hand via myswag, the camper trailer equivalent of ORS.
Have wanted one of these since I first got my Beetle in the mid 1980s.
At $200 it was a 'steal'!
These are the units that all the others imitate! :raspberry:
Pick up tomorrow.

Battery isolater and camper & assessory power.

Finally have the accessory power hooked up to the rear. Until I have time to post details here you can read what I have done, and what needs to be completed at post #624 in the 'What have you done to your car today?' thread, here ... https://offroadsubarus.com/showthread.php?t=801&page=63 .
That post also includes a link to the wiring diagram (Option B in the diagram).
With this system I will be able to:

  • Charge 2 auxiliary batteries (1 x car rear and 1 x camper trailer).
  • Run my 'auto fridge' in the back of the car.
  • Charge my 'jump start' pack in the back of the car.
  • Run my compressor from the front or rear of the car, without lifting the bonnet.
Will make for very relaxed and  traveling, especially as I'll also be able to keep the system topped up with my solar panel when camped for a few days! :)

:discomonkey:

Racks really go well with the 25mm strut lift and 25mm longer springs!

Looking great & love the carriers but is there a chance of getting into trouble with the angle you can see the r/h tail light, mine only just passed engineering so if you get a nasty Mr Plod you may have to add extra tail lights.

d-generate,
If that is the case I'll fit some slim line LED trailer lights on the lower fixed section of the racks - may do that anyway.

Ripped the black (lower) section of the rear bumper skirt at off-roading over the new year, so will trim it back, which will also allow me to fit the replacement electrical connections higher and 'out of harms way'.

Sounds like fun - where's the PICS???

Bennie!

Wiring details 2nd battery and camper trailer 12 pin

Here is a link to the details of fitting the solenoid battery 'splitter' and wiring to rear for 2nd battery & connection to battery in the camper trailer. https://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=5102.0
For anyone who is interested in info about touring I can thoroughly recommend Myswag.org

Delivery of SubaXtreme 'sports' bar delayed due to supplier glitch with aluminium castings. Should now be at my mechanic 19 Dec, so still all good for Christmas!

Once it is fitted I'll post some 'before & after' pics!

Compensating for rear 'sag' since lifted.

The above dimensions are the heights at the time of the combination of King Springs and Subtlsolutions strut blocks first being fitted.

Based on the standard height of the wheel arches, front & back, being 750mm as per the front - I think the original rears had sagged a bit - then the height with the combined 50mm at the rear arch should be 800mm.
When first fitted the rear combination was 790mm, measured tonight, with the rear unloaded, it was 755mm. This indicates that the springs have lost 35mm in unloaded height. Possibly as a combined result of 'KingSpring sag' - a known 'symptom' - and the changing out of the self levelling struts.

Anyway, I think my new camber compensating rear lift blocks, with these springs, can be a total of 60mm.

Or am I missing something here?
