Snatch strap

Said above - but important enough to repeat.

A tow strap is not a snatch strap.

There are plenty of straps with names such as tow, load, equalizer etc. These are all strong but designed for a constant load.
A snatch strap is elastic and designed to give a tug. Thing of it like a bungee cord. It stretches and you (relatively) slowly convert speed into pulling force.

Use an inelastic rope and instead you suddenly put huge forces on both vehicles and the rope. With luck the rope would snap - if not you are likely to tear bits off vehicles or twist chassis.

You are 100% correct DN. And you have explained it perfectly. Well done.

This is what happens when you use a tow strap instead of a snatch strap.

That was probably more a problem of where there attached - even a snatch strap will rip off bits if you put it on the wrong place.

Although it did show why you dont "let out slack" with a tow rope, while thats exactly what you need to do with a snatch strap.

Thanks everyone! I learned something new. Now, to find a snatch strap.

I did get pulled out of a ditch once with a tow strap. What idiot would put a ditch right where I'm trying to back up to anyway? :o That was about a year ago with my old Ford F-150.

Seems like I learn something new every time I come here!

Yes you can pull people with a tow rope - but typically you need a bigger vehicle.
With a snatch you are trading off the momentum of the pulling vehicle - so a small vehicle can get a bit of speed up and then as the snatch stretches it slows and gives some of its momentum to the other vehicle.

Eden when ever your ready to do that hill again just let me know.
as if it's anything like last time you will need me to demonstrate how the snatch straps work. :D:D:D:D

I have no regrets in having gone in:eek: and i've been past that hole again but went around it that time.
Just imagine if it had been a subaru that had gone in first?
And it's a very good example of how to use a snatch strap when your car gets bogged deep.
Will gladly go along with anyone that is willing to try and go through the mud hole and be the recovery vehicle .

So who's up for it?
Any takers??

Dont worry Eden if i can"t find the car to recover i can drive over it and make it to the other end:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Actually its not a bad video in that it shows both how NOT to do it and how to do it.

First attempt the subi went slowly and when the strap was taught put his foot down.
WRONG - thats trying to use traction to get the other guy out.

Second attempt he went faster and used the slack in the strap to get some speed and hence used his momentum to pull the other guy out.

Anyone seen the ad for the Tourag pulling the jet.
Impressive (even if it needed 4 tonnes of ballast and a special rear diff/axle setup)
But I think it would be cool to do the same with a Forester with no mods and a snatch strap. Take a run at it, get up to say 60km/h and hope that turns into 1km/h on the plane.
