Here is part one of my DIY fan cut out switch install. First I will show how I installed the switch. I got a safety switch at the auto parts store, this one was like $10 U.S. I installed it in one of the blank covers. I used a dremal motor tool to remove the plastic the was in the way. Also rember to install the switch in the safety cover upside down so that when the cover is down, the switch is on.

Cover down fans are on, Cover and switch up fans are off.

Well the engine seems to be all good now :discomonkey: Thanks to a good friend. As for my wiring harness for the cut outs. Im checking my service manual to find a way that wont trip a trouble code from the ECM. :lildevil:

Part Two Fan Cutout

This is the wiring diagram. After reading up in my service manual and consulting with my subby Tech who is the best we bleave this is the best way to do this.
The reason for the lamp is so that there is a load on the circuit for the ECM to see. the lamp could be replace with a 12 volt buzzer or chime. Cut in the fans at the fan motor lead. the rest is where you want to ground the system and get you power for the lamp, buzzer or chime.
The fuse holder next to the switch is left empty, if the switch fails just install a 20 amp fuse so the fans will run till you replace the switch.
I will be installing this in a few days I need to get a deferent switch and a chime or buzzer and some other bits. For those who need photos I will post some after I install mine

If one does not want to install a lamp or buzzer, there is a way to trick the ECM. At least on the 2000 models. The fans must show that they are not working, on two consecutive drives to trip a trouble code. Drives means (Key on start run engine to temp. key off ). What you will need to do is after your done driving when you have used the fan cutout, wile the fans are running shut the off and restart the car with fans running shut car off. this will reset the counter in the ECM. If the fans are not running when you restart just turn on the AC that kicks the fans on.

If you get a code just reset it you know the fans are good.

To all that use this there is no guarantee and it may void your warranty!!!!!!
The codes that could show up are P0480, P0483 and P1520

Thanks Nate

Fan cutout wiring

Sorry this is taking so long! I have been busy taking care of other things that are important to the wife and nursing my ankle. I turned it pretty bad last week and it is taking forever to get better.

I will finish this soon :o

Nate

Why not just remove the 'correct' fuse before crossing?
This takes about 20 seconds (assuming you already know which fuse to pull) which is also enough time to reconsider the crossing.
Another 20 seconds to replace the fuse, which is enough time to drain breaks etc before testing them.
Phil

Yes you can do that, I think there two fuses one for each fan. And that will trip repair codes after two drive consecutive drive cycles.

Nate

Thanks for asking Kevin
The ankle is much better, I didn't break it but pulled the tendons pretty bad. Today I get most of the day for me! so I will get the Install done and get pics posted
Thanks for your patients, Im a very busy father every body seams to come before me ;) But hey thats what being a dad is all about :discomonkey:

Install

Well I finished my fan cutout set up today. I took some photos to show how I did it.

First we have the parts. 14ga wire, switch, chime, and fuse holders.

This is the wired switch with the Chime and fail safe (install a 20amp fuse if the switch goes bad till repairs can be made)

Next I cut the ground wire on the harness to the car, not the fan housing so the radiator and fans can be removed like normal.

Next run the positive wire with a fuse holder to your power source of choice.
Next I went over every thing to make sure every thing is good.
