I'm looking for one that would be very flush to the vehicle so as to not obstruct air flow too much, and look good too.

Mr Turbo... That looks pretty good. I think I would want to have the front taper into the fender... but I don't think that would be hard to do, right?

Sorry for the double posts, I didn't realize it was doing that until I refreshed the screen.

Anywho... can you send me some pics of the entire assembly? And links to where to get the snorkel? Thanks!

There wasn't really much to it, apart from having the holes cut in the guard, then attaching a piece (additional) of piping to fit/connect to the air box.

I'll see what I can come up with though :)

Regards
Mr Turbo

Sweet ride indeed.

How about a short thread on the trailer? "La Tortuga" could really use one like that.

I have a little 4X6 mesh-floor job that would be handy to convert.

I have searched the website for the snorkel maker, and they don't seem to have any for a Subaru. What car was that originally for and how did you mod it to make it fit? I have an Outback that I would like to put that snorkel on since I live in an area that constantly floods.

Hi there cstmcomps!
My snorkel brand is Safari Snorkels and it was originally made for a 100 series Toyota Landcruiser. There are a few people with snorkels now, such as Mr Turbo, Kevin (these guys did it before me hehe), and now I believe Paffoh recently fitted a Toyota Hilux snorkel to his...

Here's a link to my build thread with more photos, post #45: https://offroadsubarus.com/showthread.php?t=967&page=5

There was a lot of work which was involved to make it fit as good as it does now, due to the very limited space inside the guard. The problem was getting a pipe to connect the snorkel to the intake air box. I originally had a flexible pipe but when I got it tuned, my tuner took it off because it was closing up slightly and actually restricting airflow needed to get max power, hence the reason I fabricated the metal pipe. Because the Landcruiser has a different windscreen rake to the Foz, I originally positioned the snorkel sitting parallel to the A pillar but when I made the air intake pipe, I had to reposition the snorkel at a slightly different angle to the windcreen due to limited space! Also had to mould the snorkel into the body because of the different panel compared to the Cruiser, as you can see in this photo.

A lot of mucking around  Happy with the result though! I love a challenge. Makes the car more unique!...and can't complain because I picked up the snorkel for a good deal on ebay :)

As the snorkel sits now:

G'day El Pedorro
Funnily enough, in Aus we're still calling conventional sized trailers by it's foot dimensions e.g. 6x4, 7x5 etc.....and I still don't know why that is

I'll start a short thread on the trailer as soon as I can but first, I need to go searching through old photo albums for the original pics of it! It'll definitely surprise a few.
Just a brief one for now, it started it's life as one of those small camper trailers with a flat top, no suspension and tiny 10" wheels. That was about 18 years ago now. Nowadays, the only thing from the trailer is the body, flooring and canvas. The most obvious changes are the leaf suspension, water tank, large wheel arches and flares, rear bar, big offroad wheels and tyres, custom tow hitch, the A frame roof and the storage box up front.

It has 2 already done up double beds on each side of the "wings" when opened up. It can sleep 4 adults comfortably plus 2 more on the middle area or floor. As you can see, the unique idea about the design is it can still be towed or moved around when it's set-up and all people/occupants sleeps above ground level, that's safety from all odds.

Here's a few photo's:

My off road tow hitch

Some Hitch!

You should be able to tow that thing with either the Foz or the trailer on its side. (or both on opposite sides!) That pintle hitch musta come from an Army 2-1/2 ton. It is VERY well suited to off-road. Kudos.

The trailer itself is impressive, too. The current industry standard is indeed a lengthwise arrangement, making it difficult to break camp without folding up and unfolding.

Your mods of suspension and wheels, H2O and so on are just what the Doctor ordered.

Thank you, Sir.

El Pedorro, correct! My pintle hitch was adapted from an Army 2-1/2 ton

I have a big exciting update which involves BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tyres 235/70/16 (29")

First, it arrived at my doorstep.

Then came the interesting road to fit them.

A lot of panel beating went into the front guards, along with trimming of a few plastics from the inner guard liner and side steps. Rear guards also received a bit of panel beating, mainly to ensure it wouldn't scrub while articulating. It might not be noticeable in the pics but the rear of the rear wheel arches have been given a larger radius with some cutting and reconnecting of the plastic bumper, because when the wheel iss fully compressed into the guard, it moves backwards due to the angle of the strut.

25mm bolt on wheel spacers were a necessity, now means the overall offset for the rims are +7.

Overall result was no scrubbing on articulation or turning. Not an easy job...but glad it's over. And to my knowledge, nobody has fitted rubber this big onto an SG Foz before. It looks mean!

Sneaky shot of the blacked out headlight. Only one done so far... That's why the grille and half bumper isn't on..

How is the gearing after fitting those?

Just realised you have an auto, engine seem anymore labored?

That's lookin so good.

I am curious about how the engine/transmission is doing with the tires as well. I am gonna try to run 30inch BFG al terrains that actually measure to like 29.5.

Waow ! I prefer your Foz with those big wheels, awesome ! But will you go off road, it looks too clean for that...

Thanks guys.

I can't even feel the difference in performance. Auto makes things even easier. Mid last year, I upgraded the turbo to a TD05-20G and had it tuned by Throttlehappy (Matt) in Coffs Harbour. It's pumping out around 190kW at four wheels, and I specifically asked my tuner to get as much torque down low as possible, which has been achieved. It's great down low and on full boost, it's estimated 640nm torque (haven't had it on the dyno). The extra engine and gearbox load from the bigger tyres tyres isn't even noticeable because its basically nothing compared to the torture I put my Foz up to.

And just for those curious about the Foz XT auto's towing capacity ....there's easily over 3 tonnes being pulled. The Foz being a farm machine ;) (photos from late January)

I challenge any manual driver to do that without burning the clutch ;)

A mini (late) update from the floods here in Bundaberg.

In Gin Gin, we had both our SES vehicles and flood boats trapped north of Gin Gin, so private vehicles were the go. My son was in the Foz and I was in my truck (as SES members). The Foz successfully pulled out 5 vehicles from boggy mud and flood water and has had to do many water crossings. Other 4x4s have been towed across overflowing creeks by tractor but the Foz has drove through them easily (up to 1m deep- second video) with no leaking through door seals or hesitation through the water.

Heres a few vids which you guys might enjoy.

Those giant BFG M/Ts look insane, dellsfoz! Even more so on an FXT. Nice water crossings too!

Wow, your car looks incredible!

That's exactly what I want to do with my Foz. I've just put 215/70/16 BFGs on the stock steelies but they look very skinny and tucked under the arches to far, which is a bit disappointing. Have ordered some Enkei rims at 16x7 with a +38 offset to see if that'll fill the arches out a bit, but your car is the look I really wanted, you have an awesome looking vehicle there!

I have a few questions if you don't mind:

So let me get this straight - your lift includes raised Kings and 40mm strut blocks?

Did you have any rubbing with the TT wheels before you put on your 20mm spacers? I had to cut away some of the plastic wheel arch and bash a panel join flat to stop mine rubbing and that's on the stock steelies.

Did you have to replace your studs with extended items when you put your spacers on?

Did you take any pics of when you reworked the arches? I'd love to see how you squeezed those tyres in. And with a +7 offset are you going to fit arch extensions?

Sorry for the 20 questions but I am glued to this thread with awe :iconwink:

Cheers
John

... out of curiosity, what struts are you running?
