These folks were very well equipped, but bad things can still happen!

Fortunately, they had an EPIRB, and no one is in trouble at this stage.

Crossing the Simpson is something I would not do unless accompanied by at least one other vehicle.

'Twas my very first thought, Kevin.

Really posted for the benefit of those here who do not seem to comprehend the dangers posed by the Australian outback.

They sent a helicopter to pick them up today
Ha! Previous report I heard was they had provisions and were going to try and stick it out.

It's either still raining or they were going cabin crazy. I'm guessing the former.

I believe it's also the risk of heat. That vehicle is going to be stuck for a long time is my guess with more rain forecast.
They've left it very late in the season for a crossing.

Based on my 2019 breakdown in the Triton at Dalhousie Springs near the Simpson, and depending on what roadside cover they have taken out (I have NRMA Premium), some of the recovery costs may well be covered. Again depending on what Comprehensive cover they have taken, any damage to the vehicle could be covered. But they will be very lucky to come out of this without a big hole in their bank account! It used to be in the order of A$7K to recover a normal 4WD in the Simpson and at times the 4WD to recover couldn't be sucked out of the mud so just the occupants were taken out of the desert.

This one is certainly in deeply, so will be very tough to pull out. Drying out and much digging and jacking could be a better option. That could be months away and very exxie.......

Yikes! Not sure a second vehicle would have helped though. Looks like poor timing from the start. We are always solo in our desert so we don't go in the desert before/after rain.

In the mountains, we are fine with light to normal rain, depending on trails, but heavy rain can literally wash you out on many high-elevation trails above the treeline so that's an issue, too.

I believe I read the nearest publican drove out there and dug them out....once the weather cleared.

I imagine that would be Ben Fullager the Birdville pub manager and friend of mine. Great bloke, been on lots of trips with him when he was a member of the NSW Subaru Club. He may have gone out there in his Unimog.

That he did. Read about it somewhere. About 6 hours digging, then popped it out.
