What is best lower priced used Subaru for off-roading under $5000

Full time AWD is a whole different ball game from 'AWD on demand', and most 'AWD' vehicles are not full time AWD.
One thing I found surprising about our Pajero - it has selectable AWD - it’s done by the driver’s choice and like the Subaru it can be selected on the fly, same for locked centre diff 4wd mode. So similar to the Subaru, just can’t grab low range while the vehicle is moving like the brumby and L series can.
Best but is that it’s the driver making the calls, not a computer!
^ indeed e.g. the older X-Trails that dropped AWD at 40 klm/hr and reverted to FWD :D
That’s nuts, and disappointing to find out as/for the owner...

Cheers

"our Pajero - it has selectable AWD" as does my Triton and one of the main reasons I got it (Super Select II)

disappointing to find out
Especially when you find out trying to climb a harder track up Big Red! (which is where a member on one of our club trips discovered this issue)

Older subarus are good...and cheap.. to maintain most importantly i think.
Newer subarus are more or less like other similar cars with awd or worse . They good for sure just not diesel cars...
For travel and have fun on off road roads you dont rly need much.
