G'day & Welcome aboard @mattcmurphy1137

Will need further confirmation but if it's a base "BR" model I believe it still had the EJ2.5 so 2005-2014; but I am not familiar with the Outback beyond my 1997 which had the 2.5 but it was a DOHC engine unlike my Forester which is SOHC.

EZ36 will fit with a bit of a push. 👍

It depends what you include in 'changing the engine'

Anything subaru EJ or EZ30 will fit if you also change things like ECU, wiring and subframes.

Something BL/BP would be easiest / minimal effort, as the wiring will match.

At what stage does it become incompatible?

When it's not an EJ2.5 ;)
That’s a tiny engine @Kevin! It would never work well! My lawn mower has a bigger engine than that, and it’s a single cylinder!!

🤣

Couldn’t help myself, sorry mate!

To the OPer, any EJ25 from the same model and series will work. Some earlier EJ25s might work but could require a head swap and possibly piston swap depending on the piston design used in your model.

The H6 is a good option and is compatible with some extra work... they came out with a H6 option didn’t they?

Cheers

Sure did. there's an early 2000's one around the corner from me. I see it regularly and want it for parts. (wheels & engine, I'd love to put an HS in my Forester, partly the justification for buying the SVX)
