Upgrade with Ironman springs?

Reports from other forums are all good.
Yeah, I am pretty much the only person who managed to puncture 3 in 1 year. All happened in the SW corner of the state where the rocks are not only ubiquitous as everywhere in the AZ desert, but also particularly sharp. That, and I was running SL on a 2.5t trail weight truck. Two of the punctures happened at some speed (but not great speed) and one was a sidewall burst at 25 psi when I was moving briskly uphill at about twice the speed of a column of Jeeps, which is not saying much, 20mph at most. It is interesting because visually that part of the desert is no different from any other. Never had an issue with them elsewhere in AZ, in Utah, or Montana (mountain rocks, so lots of erosion, not sharp).

On a Forester, they should strike a pretty good balance between road manners and capability.

Good to hear all the positive reports about the wildpeaks, I will put the open country on the shortlist as well! Thanks for all your input and efforts explaining tires and suspension. Once the shops are open again I will do some shopping and maybe I will start a member journal with all the preparation steps. If you start investigating an overland travel like this the only thing you find is landcruisers, hilux and pajero's. But those are really expensive here on road tax. And luckily there are forums like this with people from over the world were Subaru is more common!

So far as tyres are concerned the BFG AT should also be on the shortlist. I know they are heavy but will rarely let you down (pun intended). Another consideration is replacement availability during the trip - can I assume you will be carrying two spares or at least a complete spare and a carcass (plus necessary tools to swap the rubber)

Perhaps check out ALNSM overland on youtube, he's an overlander in France.
I think he's going a bit too commercial for my liking, but has a number of maintenance & preparation videos.

Yeah, spare tires will be something you need to decide on. Carrying 2 is popular in Australia but chances you puncture 2 LT tires are extremely slim while the size and weight of the second spare are very real.

I would choose one matching spare to an LT set of all terrain tires and a good repair kit. Chances you burst 2 sidewalls are even slimmer than puncturing 2 tires through the tread.

Because if you are anywhere remote you need backup,
Plus you get the bonus of being able to do 6 wheel rotations, then you get more even wear. :)
