Premix or concentrated coolant

I use Subaru coolant - purchased in bulk a long time ago so can't remember where but someone here may know. I'm on my last 5L container now so will have to think about stocking up again. I'm feel sure the OEM coolant is something else rebranded.

One golden rule - do not mix different coolants! It could easily wreck your engine.

If an emergency, add (preferably) distilled water, then change your coolant as soon as possible.

Even in an emergency, never drink coolant - it's toxic/poisonous.

I'd rather drink the coolant rather than thinking about seals and head gasket repairs i think

Well diethylene glycol was indeed added to some European wines to enhance the sweetness back in the '80s. No wonder I never felt the cold when skiiing :ROFLMAO:

I’m running with genuine *cough* Toyota coolant concentrate, mixed with distilled water at 50/50 ratio. It’s about $46 for a 4 or 5L bottle. I’ll have to verify the size on that.

It’s red and easy to distinguish. At one point we had three different types of green coolant in three vehicles. They’ve all since been flushed and swapped over to the yota stuff.

When we had Toyotas, we only used Toyota Red on the cooling system as it is cheaper than whatever was being sold at auto accessories stores. We used Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner on those, though. Now we exclusively use Subaru Genuine Coolant.

I wouldn't; it's the same as Bars Leaks. Yucky stuff!

does anyone use the subaru cooling conditioner??
You don't have to once you have the genuine coolant. The cooling conditioner (concentrate) was designed as an add-on to the cooling system of the first generation EJ25 with the graphite lining on the head gasket so the graphite won't break down easily and buy the owner (and the dealer) time before what used to be an inevitable leak. With the conditioner, some owners of first gen EJ25s were able to have the original graphite-lined head gaskets up to 350,000km. Later EJ25s are fine with the genuine coolant or whatever highly-engineered fluid is out there.

There are blue alternatives in auto accessories or parts store but some of them are not adequate for our cooling system. The blue Penrite, for example, caused some temperature fluctuations in my brother's BP. He bought it when it was on sale at Repco. It looked like regular distilled water tinted with blue. After putting in Subaru genuine coolant, it started running cool as.

A post I made on "the other forum" back in 2009:
" Subaru coolant in Oz is made by Castrol ("to Subaru specifications"). It contains 50% ethylene glycol and that's about all the container tells us".
Also from the same forum "Diethylene Gylcol/Ethylene Gylcol and Sodium Benzoate/Potassium Hydroxide "
And from Subaru Oz (again in 2009):
Regarding cooling system conditioner, Cooling system conditioner is an additive sold in America and is of no relevance to the Australian market.

I forgot to mention that, as well. I believe it was a result of a class-action lawsuit. Why has it always been the US having such issues?

One can usually find the conditioner on eBay or Amazon but not in any dealership outside of the US, they are asked to procure one by the customer.

the same stealerships that never call you back or answer your emails in regards to parts being in stock??
I can imagine they will be much less efficient now because of COVID. Luckily, our Subaru parts warehouse here kept their best people.

I remember around 20 years ago, I used to order from Dubai, UAE anything Subaru related and the parts would be here via TNT, FedEx or DHL 3 days after payment. They were cheaper too. Nowadays, the price difference is not that big anymore.

I believe the parts warehouse there is the 2nd biggest after Japan. Before the GFC, they were the biggest as Japan used that warehouse for global distribution. They have very efficient system there as they can deliver parts within 3 days even to those requiring parts in deeper Africa.

I beg to differ on that. I’ve made a few purchases through partsouq and I know I’ve saved a few hundred dollars, even after the exchange rate! Best bit is that you don’t have to deal with a dealer’s parts interpreter that doesn’t want to be looking up all the parts you’re after. That, and I can purchase multiple makes so I cover all of our vehicles in one order. Win win.

One example that sticks in my mind: I recently purchased genuine oil filters for $US5 ea, so about $AU8 each. Steal!

And in these interesting times it’s all contact free too.

I haven't tried partsouq yet but upon checking the site, I found out that their listings are VIN-specific, which makes things a lot easier. They do have good prices, especially for the genuine ones. I may actually start referring to the site for genuine parts. Thanks for the tip, @El_Freddo.

Local subaru guys said they use just whats in most shops for years and its fine. so i use it too green or blue or red, premixed. Take 2 5l bottles and carry rest in car just in case .
