That trail button is just a simplified centre diff-lock, according to some owners. Simplified because, older centre diff-locks are usually locked at 50-50 but the one on Mazda is a bit biased toward the front and shuts off at ~50 kph.

I like the MX-5s and their rotaries. If I am going to get an FR manual fix, I will get an MX-5, most probably an NB. It's light, so tyres are going to be longer lasting. With the rotaries, it's going to be the RX-8.
