June 2010 Plenty Hwy Trip EOI

I've got to admit I'd love to come along... I want to make a trip to the Cape and to Perth to see my cousins (an elaborate excuse but true ) but it doesn't matter how busy I am I can't get away for that long... teacher=fixed holidays. After 13 years of teaching I've never had a holiday outside term breaks. I'll see what I can negotiate with my new employer for next year. I might be able to negotiate some sick leave in return for time away.

When are the school holidays next year?

Just a little bump. I've only been back at work for 3 days after my Xmas holidays and they're already telling me I need to further reduce my oustanding leave.

It would be a great trip I'd imagine, and wish I could come along, however, I won't be able to make it, for the same reason as Alex; being a teacher and having fixed holidays.
 Being a casual teacher, I can't afford time off during term, as I don't get paid, plus, I don't accrue any holidays!

Regards,

Joel.

Trip begins 15th May for 3 weeks. Still looking for anyone who wants to come along, with or without own car. Trip will be for 3 weeks.

FWIW I'm still trying to negotiate leave. I certainly have enough leave and they keep telling me I need to reduce outstanding leave but as soon as I put in for leave they don't want to approve it :rolleyessarcastic:

Bad news. I haven't been able to secure leave for this :( At least they've explained why now. Rally I'll give you a call in the next day or so. Was really looking forward to this :(

Australian 'Management': Post #27+Post #32="really!"

My understanding is that there is a requirement under the industrial system for employees to take leave within 2 years of accruing it / not to accrue more than 8 weeks (for most who get 4 weeks per year).
Employees are entitled to take ANNUAL leave at a time of their choosing, subject to reasonable notice. If you have accrued significant 'back leave', due to your employer not being willing to you being 'off the job' your employer is probably in breach of current industrial relations lay by not allowing you the time off, subject to reasonable notice.
Clearly, your employer isn't employing sufficient staff with your skill set to enable you and other staff to take your leave ENTITLEMENTS.
Unfortunately, this is not an unusual situation in both the public and private sectors in Australia, and often results from 'down sizing' to produce short term 'impressive' balance sheets / deliver management 'K.P.I.s' with no thought to either long term profitability or business sustainability. It often also delivers large bonuses to 'Management'.
I bet 'Management' get to take holidays when they want.
This is just another form of workplace bullying, and evidence of how much is still to be done to remove the excesses of the 'workchoices' era.
(rant ends!)

Are you able to share?

Bugger about the cancelled trip. I'd love to come. $$$ are the problem, and I'm the same as Joel, although I don't pursue it enough at the moment...

Hopefully you'll get something sorted, I know how bummed you'd all be about this. Chin up, next time!

Cheers

Bennie

I've decided to go to Europe for a couple of weeks, then do a quick trip to the centre on my own. Maybe next year.

OOh Europe! Should be getting a bit warmer now, hopefully by the time you leave, the ash has settled from the Icelandic volcano and you can land over there (wherever exactly you're going). Have a top trip!

Regards,

Joel

In my case the problem is that the company was 3 people for about 4 or 5 years and then had a sudden expansion. So I went from one of 2 programmers, to being the lead programmer and having to look after some major projects as well as new employees.

The other bit that makes it hard is that often we have "hard" deadlines - line an election. You cant be late for an election!

I guess this was doomed when 2 of the 3 people were struggling with getting leave, to co-ordinate it at the same time was always going to be tough.

Anyway - might see about a 4 day weekend or a week long trip to a closer destination.

Sorry guys, I haven't been on here for about 6 weeks.

Firstly let me apologise to Rally and Dicknose. It was unexpected and with little notice.

Without going into too much detail I had 2 unepxected resignations from the department, one at a senior level. We're still short staffed after letting people go last year so this was the last thing I needed. Both positions have now been filled but it's still going to be a few more weeks of pain as they get up to speed. Suffice to say the last 6 weeks have been crap from my POV. I'll be back regularly in a few more weeks.
