I am looking for expressions of interest in running a 3 week trip that will go from Sydney, through Wetern NSW, into SA, up the Oodnadatta, north into Alice Springs, across to Boulia in Queensland, through Longreach and back to NSW. We will not be using the Stuart Highway in South Australia. We will be going by Lake Eyre, and with any luck, it might have some water in it, but this is rare. We will be going through remote areas of the outback and it should make for an excellent adventure.

Yep, I'm interested though I may break off once in QLD rather than returning to Sydney and head towards the cape.

Hard to say for sure as sometimes plans have to change even if you don't want them to but at the same time this isn't something you can start planning at the last minute.

The idea of heading to the cape is most appealing, but would add at least a week to the trip. Something I could well be persuaded to do!

The reason for 12 months warning is so interested parties can plan their annual leave and other matters. Eventually there will be a need to lock in, but that is some way off. A mate of mine is considering going halves with me in a Forester, so who knows?

A week! You'd want to spend more than a week doing Cape York.

(BTW - there are possibilities of a 2010 trip with the club to Broome; so Rally you maybe right with suggestions of 2012 planning!)

Some of you might recall that I was planning a big trip for this year from mid July through Mid Sep going up to the cape then around the gulf to Kakadu and down the middle to the rock and back to Sydney.

As I was telling Rally I had to put those plans on hold when I ended up buying the up spec model to get all the features I wanted in the new car so the extra $10k on the car absorbed the holiday money.

I'm now planning that or a very similar trip for next year instead. So for me, 2 - 3 weeks doing what Rally has proposed and then splitting off and heading to the cape and around to Kakadu and thereby adding 3 or 4 weeks isn't a problem. If anyone wants to tag along on all or part of that then fine.

Hi Kevin,

Well, that was just off the top of my head. I once did an itinerary for just a Cape York Trip but have lost it now. Ultimately it all depends on how much time I can get off work, so maybe it would come down to doing it as a stand alone trip. Time will tell. I take it then hat you will be going on the Broome trip?

If it eventuates, is not too long and I've got sufficient holidays accrued. There were some suggestions it would be 3 months!

When we went to the Cape we took 3 weeks Cairns to Cairns. Spent 2 nights at Twin Falls, 2 at Chilli Beach, 3 or 4 at the top (Sesia) then over to Weipa for a couple more nights. So we took our time.

The biggest secret of all is how you get to accumulate holidays at all. Please PM me with your secrets so I can achieve same! :)

Perhaps he works while he is on the road, or in Kevins case while he's offroad.

Whatever the secret is, half your luck mate.

No secret here - I have 12 weeks accrued!
All you do is work for a company that is very busy!!

I got told my major work goal for this year is to reduce my holidays.
Our company was bought by a US company and the biggest single liability for the company was my holidays (more than the rest of the company combined - then again Ive been here 8 years, nearly everyone else is less than 2 years)
So we agreed that I need to take at least 6 weeks (which means its about 6 years to get rid of my accrued leave, since thats only 2 weeks of accrued Im eating into).
So I planned for 2 weeks leave between now and October and our major customer (a pay tv company that does cable and satellite - if that isnt enough hint it starts with fox and rhymes with hell!) started to beatch that the project that Im the only engineer working on is going to be a few weeks behind their marketing driven dead-line. Couldnt you take your holidays after Oct? Hang on, you have another project due for min Nov. How about after that!
They should be lucky Im not taking 10 weeks!

Back to topic - I probably could grab a 3 week holiday mid next year.
And I would be keen to do a trip like this - especially with Rally cooking!!

Would definitely love to have you come along DN.

I agree, it's not hard to accumlate holidays. I have just over 8 weeks owing myself currently.

My work told me basically the same thing, have to reduce my leave as a priority so I said "fine, I'll take 6 weeks off" to which they replied "no, you can't do that, there's too much work on." LOL.

I too have about 11 weeks owing to me in holidays with even more in sickies of which would be around 13 weeks or so.

But getting back to the topic, I'd love to go, especially if Rally's cooking, but due to certain circumstances I'll have to pass unfortunately.

I've still got this plan on the back burner- for now. In time, we will need to take stock of who still can come, but for now, just keep it in the back of your mind as something to really look forward to.

August 2009 update.

So far, I have Mat, Simon, Adam and myself going for this, with DN showing interest. I have some friends in an XT showing interest, and another mate also showing strong interest.
