Jack's Journey, another Poverty Pack

Q2u5UhN (2).jpg
Jack is a one owner since new (me!) SG MY04 Forester X.
He's served us well over the years, mostly as a daily driver for SWMBO with a few camping trips towing a 7'x4' light off road camper trailer as well as board carrier and shuttle bus for the kids.
The last 18 months He's been reduced to Camper Trailer puller & Mal/Nipper (surf lifesaving) board carrier.
About 8 months back, SWMBO started raising discussions about trading Jack in on "Something Else" to the value of about $15 - 20ksecond hand, hiluxy sort of thing as she felt Jack was getting a little worn out.
This was to be used predominantly as a shuttlebus, camper trailer tower & board carrier mind you, but with a view to more adventurous touring..

With a little bit of effort, I managed to convince her that Jack was not in fact terribly worn out (backed up by the mechanic thankfully) but just needed a bit of a spruce up.

And thus the journey begins..

so that snorkel now is water proof ? can you tell what you used what you modified and such. and is it like completely non sinkable now haha. you did not put any pics about snorkel job did you ? or i just missed them.
those lights are huge !! so they cover some of that air intake to radiator . thats no prob ?

The snorkel is waterproof.

The engine? not yet by a long shot! Got to try and protect all the electrical components as much as possible. Lots of fish oil I guess..?
Also need to install a breather for the rear diff.

The lights are Lightforce Blitz 240's they make no difference at all to temperature at idlling speeds with the grill off. Haven't taken it for a run yet as I need to secure the light bar, it's only really tacked on at the moment, going to have to get some bolts onto it. I don't think I'll have a problem with heat

Amazing man
Looks awesome in that pic and it’s not even done yet
I’m keen to see the end result
And those lights are impressive
Definitely got me thinking...... lol

would large lights light up more ground from roof rack vs bumper ? i always thinking that what if you hit something on track and those lights will be first ones to hit that . looks cool sure.

^ I agree with this concern. I am prepared to lose whatever I mount on the front bumper; already smashed my Fogs!

I think it comes down to personal opinion if big spots are better on roof or on bumper.
Either way if the spots are as good as Ben Up North’s you shouldn’t notice much difference as they shine light way down the track and don’t produce much flood light.
Led bars are a completely different story as they aren’t made for long distance but instead have good flood and average distance.

When I positioned my best led bar on the bumper and the roof I noticed a big difference in how the light worked for me.
On the front bumper I had good overall flood and spot but it casts shadows in dips in the ground/road and wasn’t high enough to see into or over medium/Long grass.

Positioned on the roof I found the led bar worked better as it was always able to shine down into Long grass or dips.

and on bumper they could be pretty safe still , look old school rally cool style and be practical as that but some ideas i just dont get it, as thats what you will hit first. and you made your approach angle worse because of this

The lights are actually just back a bit from the front of the bumper, but f I hit anything in the front the lights will go for sure, unless it's justa car parck nudge (and I generally only hit the front sides when I do that..!)

I don't think I'll be too worried about the lights If I hit something in the front, because of the reast of the damage that's likely to occur.

Approach angle is totally unchanged, nothing goes below the original bumper.

Considered mounting them on the roof for even better range, but they would look pretty absurd up there - they're massive. I would be forever paranoid about knocking them off due to low branches, car park ceilings and the like too.

I'm looking at putting a couple of smallish LED bars on the roof for flood lighting, or maybe one larger one if it floods wide enough. The advantage as I see it for two smaller lights is that I can point them to the sides a bit more. Then I can watch the kangaroos jumping into the side of the car (why the bloody idiots do this is beyond me, but they do.)

Done.
Almost...

Still need to wire up the lights and goop the snorkel a bit.

Looks cool. Does that snorkel changes intake sound or like make sound itself? Maybe noise from wind when driving?

You can hear the air getting sucked in quite well at higher revs, gives it more of a burble.

Couldn't resist a happy snap next to a mildly lifted old Bravo. I think I've got more clearance.. ;)

A bit hard to tell because the photo's so dodgy..

You would have more clearance because the Bravo's diffs would be lower.

Yes 4x4's have massive diffs hanging quite low usually,
when i say massive, i mean compared to our cute ones lol

Bravo Subaru......Bravo :discomonkey:

(look at the difference in height in the towbars.. the bottom of my diff was almost higher than the top of the bravo's I reckon)

But then they have different articulation solid axle vs independant suspension and IFS will allways be better on higher speeds .
So how much lift in all you have there now? Ground clearance front and rear ?

I agree mate
Bottom of your diff is at same height as top of bravo
How much clearance does he have ?
More than a bravo bwahahahah

1WD

But on solid axle if your one rear wheel goes on something same time you raise all axle to angle so it gain more clearance vs independant just one wheel goes up and diff stays in same place. In some situations it can be one better or another. But if you push it hard solid axle will hold more punishment

But he still has more clearance than a bravo [emoji6]
