Jack's Journey, another Poverty Pack

Q2u5UhN (2).jpg
Jack is a one owner since new (me!) SG MY04 Forester X.
He's served us well over the years, mostly as a daily driver for SWMBO with a few camping trips towing a 7'x4' light off road camper trailer as well as board carrier and shuttle bus for the kids.
The last 18 months He's been reduced to Camper Trailer puller & Mal/Nipper (surf lifesaving) board carrier.
About 8 months back, SWMBO started raising discussions about trading Jack in on "Something Else" to the value of about $15 - 20ksecond hand, hiluxy sort of thing as she felt Jack was getting a little worn out.
This was to be used predominantly as a shuttlebus, camper trailer tower & board carrier mind you, but with a view to more adventurous touring..

With a little bit of effort, I managed to convince her that Jack was not in fact terribly worn out (backed up by the mechanic thankfully) but just needed a bit of a spruce up.

And thus the journey begins..

Did you swap ECUs or just relocate?
Relocate. I'm an idiot. Just found out why... I was fiddling with my keys earlier, didn't click it back together properly so battery lost contact..
:o

We've all done stuff like that, my most recent - I wondered why my Triton would not start the other day after tearing the dash apart for some wiring; it was in D as I had moved the shifter back to give me more room to work on it.

Swapped out the drivers headlight, because mine was a bit cracked.

Not that much left I need on the parts car now... have to pull the CVs for spares, will probably keep the rear diff as it's an auto (in case I get around to changing the front for something with DCCD so the ratios match). Will keep the driver side front quarter panel as it's pretty good (better than mine). same with the tail-lights, they're in pretty good nick, not that mine are bad, but there's a little crack in one.

Have to install the tow bar from it. Also thinking about taking the carpet, as mine is pretty worn, maybe just lay the new carpet over the old for sound deadening purposes!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to what else I should keep?

The whole car as a donor....
I do have the space I guess.. will have to move it out the back somewhere as the boss wants her spot under the carport back. She'll definitely want it back when she gets her new work car. Which I don't really understand, it will still be just her work car.. ;)

Work cars live outside for exactly that reason - they’re a work car!

Cheers

Might be a bit uncomfortable in the tropics!

Biggest problem is in the wet. You can get absolutely drenched in the two metres from the carport to the car, so it's kinda understandable that she wants to be under the carport. Umbrellas are a must.

Could tell her to put on a rain jacket and harden up

Rain jackets are essential if you are staying in the rain. not so good when getting in a car, makes the car soggy and then it starts being stinky.
Was out looking at cars the other day. Some of them were very stinky.

My first online unboxing!
Heat exchanger arrived yesterday.
Chinese quality, let's hope it doesn't leak!!

It actually came out of Brisbane, so I reckon it's pretty safe, especially seeing China is relatively covid free.
If it was coming out of the USA via Melbourne however...

;)

Just purchased some new front window gussets as mine are cactus.
Wow, only 2 1/2 years later and the driver's side one has split a bit already. :( that's a bit depressing. 95% of my driving is done with the window down too.

Had to bodge up one of my spotlight connectors at the Light end because the cable wasn't clamped tight enough to the pin and it melted the connector a bit.
Nothing that a pair off surgical forceps and a hacksaw couldn't fix though ;)

Right. So I'm jamming this chinese radiator into my SG, supposedly for an Series II, but supposedly it will fit. almost, but the fan mounts are slightly out and I've got this sitcking out next to the cap:

What the? Is this on a Series II and what does it join to?
Second question... what's the best way of plugging the damn thing? because otherwise as soon as things heat up all the coolant will come out of it.

Arrgh!

Is there another overflow pipe, Ben?

Or is this just pointing the wrong way?

On the OEM radiator, this is on the filler neck, pointing towards the p/s of the vehicle.

Probably a small length of high pressure fuel / heater hose, wack a snug bolt in the end and clamp it. Without further research it could be for the turbo version.

PS yes, the turbo version (water tank hose)
