2003 forester burning oil.

Tightening the sump bolts a little may stop any leaks.

of the two ej motors I've had ej20 and an ej22. High km motors as well, they've both used consistently about 1tr of oil every 10,000 for the last 100,000km for one motor (10w40 semi synth).

Only times it's been out of the ordinary was when either the cam seals or rocker seals needed changing, or both. These are common on ej motors, but there's a few places a motor can leak oil.

My sump plug also doesn't leak and I've never changed the washer, can't say the same for the gearbox oil leaking all over the exhaust...

OK, I've scanned most of the thread

-An 03 is the EJ25 in the US too, Yes.

-Forget synthetics, Do you guys have Castrol oils over there?
if so, Semi-Synth Castrol Magnatec is the Go-To oil for Subaru's, it goes black very quickly (meaning it's cleaning) and it very resilient to being burned,
Normally comes in 10W40, but the fuel saver 5W30 is good if you're in the snow.

_Also being an EJ25, it's typical for them to leak oil around the head-gaskets.

did you mean rocker cover gaskets ?

Avoid full synthetics! I don't know why but they can glaze the bore and you'll burn oil like no tomorrow.
It also doesn't burn blue smoke like mineral oil either.

We couldn't work out why my mum's 2004 corolla was loosing oil - no visible leaks, no blue smoke - running full synthetic oil as that's what the previous owner was running. It got so bad that to drive from Adelaide to Central Vic mum had to check the oil twice to fill up.

I agree with idw about a bit of oil use. My EJ22 uses a bit between changes. I think it's got something to do with the Crank Ventilation system.

Well I'm following sure changing the seal in the drain plug. I haven't found any leaks other than possible pan gasket and Drain plug. Heed gasketso were changed before I got the car. We do have Castrol ando familiar with magnatec. May give that a shot.

There is no gasket on the sump - just a sealant. It's pretty rare for the sealant to allow a leak to start unless the sump has had a pretty big hit to it.
