Which SH should i buy?

Nice review and echoes my thoughts exactly on the box.

Add some bigger tyres and that 1>2 gap is HUUUUGE
But, ECU fixes that mostly as you get your torque when you ask for it, and you'll gain a few hundred rpm at both ends of the torque curve.
Mine is completely drivable and pushing 18psi at 1300rpm :D even with 215/70/16's on it

The diesel engine is awesome. Plenty of low down grunt and enough pull to overtake on highway.
I'm not a huge fan of the 6 speed however.
Secondly (and this is the worst bit) the gap between 1st and 2nd is way too big. Even on the street if you start on a hill you have to rev out 1st quite high before changing into 2nd to keep the revs even close to the torque window. This becomes much worse off road and found myself having to leave it in first and just go slower if on a steep incline.
If they beefed up the old duel range box and made it a 6 speed it would make this car sooo much better.

I also ripped the sump gaurd off within 20mins of being on the island, which i was half expecting to be honest.

First mod will be an alloy sump gaurd :)

Well you have pretty much summed up the issues:
The diesel engine is great and you should be able to crawl up a hill with the torque, but the gear box boffins at Subaru have coupled a gear box for super low fuel economy and then try to add off road ability with a low first gear and the gap to second which you have noted. One of the Subaru club members here in Victoria has the same issues with his diesel engine Outback when off road.
Plastic sump cover ! What can I say, replacing it with a sump guard should be the first mod, but you know that anyway.
Apart from that excellent to hear that you had a good trip.

Did you have a lift with your SG? those tires looked nice on it and I'm planning on lifting mine before I buy my next set

No lift on my SG. I did plan to get some 1" spacers but with the roof basket on it only bearly fit in my tiny garage as is haha.

Robbks, can't remeber if it was this forum or another but i remember reading that you went from the dual mass flywheel to a single. Can i ask what brand you used? I assume it feels a million times better. Thanks

Greeno,

exedy do a dual->single conversion kit.

Mine is all Genuine Subaru parts
I assume a clutch and flywheel from a late model 6-speed WRX.

Where are you located.?

Yes i got a quote for an exedy and it was more expensive than a genuine dual mass. Subaru genuine parts are very competitively priced. I have a subaru trade catalog at work and see they do a conversion kit from dual to single but it says not suitable for turbo or diesel models. Haven't called them to ask yet as my clutch is still working (although doesn't feel great) but if Robbks is using genuine parts then obviously it can be done.

I'm in brisbane and im a mechanic so labour costs are no issue. I just have a reputation of spending alot of money unnecessary on my cars which my partner has recently clamped down on haha

I have a single mass flywheel on both by WRX and turbo Forrie. No problems. I get trade prices and found the single mass option to be worthwhile.

One should not confuse a splash tray with a sump guard.

Maybe look at an STI 6 speed which may have more suitable ratios. Not a cheap option though.
