TR: Vic High Country May 2015

Just back from the Googs Track with the Subaru Club of SA.
Great and lots of sand. A bogged Land Cruiser with trailer who thought he could just brute force power his way up the dunes was the only delay.
Even the unlifted Outback managed to only get stuck once.
Too short a time though. Could have spent longer exploring side tracks but with a couple of families along time was a big constraint.
Just made it back before the crappy weather struck.

That is pretty close to what it was. Despite not looking as bad the ones going the other way it was probably the most concerning one from a controllability perspective. The key with deep crossings is to have the nose of the car facing up stream so the water hitting the side of the car pushes it across helping progress. The videos of going the other direction demonstrate this well. However this is sometimes difficult as the front always enters the fast deep water first resulting in the car being nose facing downstream more often or not.

The last video (return crossing) was one of these cases, the whole crossing I was battling to get the noise pointing upstream and it was only at the very end that it came around. Doesn’t look it from the video but the whole crossing I was steering considerably left.

Why don`t you use a radiator blind?
No doubt you have a good reason for not doing so.

[FONT=&quot]I don't really have a great reason for it. The reasons I have are:
1) Subaru engine electrics seems to be waterproof enough to keep the engine running whilst completely submerged (although whist submerged the alternator does stop outputting.
2) I don't have one.
3) I really dont like the idea of having to store a great big sheet of plastic that is dripping wet somewhere in the car after the crossing.
4) In extreme cases such as this I would imagine the blind would create marginally more resistance and trap a small amount more air creating extra flotation (although this is probably pretty damn close to negligible)

Sounds reasonable.
You are correct they can be a pain in the A when wet and also finding suitable points to tie them to can be tricky.
Going to Cape York some years ago I used one and also sprayed the motor with copious amounts of CRC prior to getting wet but the water was neither flowing as fast nor as deep as your sterling effort.

Small piece of plastic - e.g. small PE tarp (e.g. about 800 x 600 mm), with eyelets in each corner.

Octopus straps to two front tie down points and rear edge of bonnet.

Put over roof bars/rack using octi straps to dry off ...

I found it best if it is wide enough to completely cover car front. About 1.5/2.0 metres is good. Can then attach to front of front guards and outside mirrors but watch for tyre fouling.
