What I am saying is really self-evident - most Subarus never go off the bitumen - so the market for 'real' off road bits is very small. People like us.
This has become a great discussion with relevant and valid points made.
I'm going to agree with nuchalava's post #35 and substantiate it here

"Subaru, America's third most 'off-roaded' brand"
I'll try to come back and contribute my findings regarding suspension setup in my modified 95 legacy, but until then....
There are a lot of great points in here and advices for setup's will vary by intended use and ultimate purpose.
Essentially, subarus are cars and while they can be modified to further increase their already wide range of capabilities, they are not four by fours. Even heavily modified subarus (caveat to new gen AWDs... Old gen PT 4WD Roos are more capable) only approach stock 4x4s, BUT they do so at significantly better comfort, ride quality, fuel efficiency.
Sure my rig pulled off Lockhart basin in Moab, and when looking at trail guides they indicate a stock 4 wheel drive can do it......my old legacy still pulls 23city and hauls he kids to daycare everyday, comfortably. I'm sure my buddy with a wrangler can't say that, nor does my buddy with a 2" lifted FJ cruiser claim any of my boasts, besides Lockhart. Ask any of the rental jeeps in Moab or anyone else who's done the White Rim trail how long it took them and how comfortable it was and I don't think anyone will tell you it was a fun 'ride'. That trail is abot the experience, sure (and highly recommended when in Moab for a few days), but with the ride quality of a car, modified for additional clearance, this Subaru comfortably flies over ruts and some wash boarding that would rattle the teeth out of a 4x4 driver.
I guess what I'm getting at is we can modify these rigs a bit, certainly not with the support of range of capabilities the Jeep and yota crowd have access too, but our cars, off the showroom floor, are capable of A LOT!! And with even slight (while limited in breadth) suspension and drivetrain changes, they can amaze!
While still pulling off totally reasonable fuel efficiency AND ride comfort.
This is a good thread and while the OP has evolved, it is becoming a great thread for discussing the merits of different suspension modifications! It's tough to have it all in a suby (long travel, high clearance and articulation, etc) but given our limiting unibody construction and independent suspension with viscous AWD (save the DCCD crowd
. We're able to do some effective mods and get our cars in amazing places, usually to some accolades and dropped jaws!!
