Robs Subaru Journey

Way back when I was 21 (10+ years now) I did a bit of offroading in a 96 Pathfinder, V6.
petrol prices started to bite hard so the Pathfinder made way for a 97 NA Forester was deemed good enough for the odd bush track, and lugging around my camping gear.

I stumbled accros an article in Hot4's magazine (I think) on the GTRydaz National Meet,
this was the beginning of the end for ever owning an unmodified car again..
So the NA made way for a stock as a rock 98 GT

(the day I sold the NA)

CarPIX63.jpg

The GT firstly went up about 20mm on some HD Pedders springs, got some more power from a TD04, Exhaust, tune and all the other parts we could throw at it, Then it went down to a sensible road height.

(just before I sold it)

Along the way I got tied up with the RS Liberty Club and fell in love with a mean Black TT Legacy, when it eventually came up for sale, I had to have it.

2 years of pain and anguish in modifiying and maintaining the tempremental TT system, but in the end I got it there with a full ECU loom rewire to accept the later model ECU to run the later model EJ20R that had been replaced by the last owner.
I figured once it was running fine, I'd sell it and move away from Turbo's (yes a Twin-Turbo does that to a man) and search out a H6

While it was for sale, I did a track-day with the RSCLC National Meet in Tassie :lildevil:

With that out of the driveway, the 06 3.0R-B was getting some love,
swapped the rims for GTB 18's, ECU tune, quad-tip STi mufflers, 7" tablet install for navigation, music, etc, TunedBy STi struts and springs, etc,

Along came a great idea to get out of the old tent and fit an Oztrail Camper6 Top to my 6x4 trailer.

After a few trips it became apparent that 150mm ground clearamce was an issue

2014-11-06%2021.02.46.jpeg

So I fitted some 1' Lift Blocks to maintain the great handling and load carrying of the STi billies and pink springs, and some Outback 17's with higher profile tyres to smooth out the ride and add further lift.
all in all I gained almost 50mm extra clearance which has done the job so far, but still makes some more serious back-roads a challenge, combined with the long wheelbase and long overhangs of the Gen4, any snad-work is tough going.
So here she sits today

2015-01-24%2015.54.36.jpg

Somewhere I toyed with the idea of going skywards again, so the hunt for an 08-10 Pathfinder began, nothing turned up within my price-range that was any good or under 1 million km's, so the idea of a lightly Lifted SH Diesel Forester dawned on me.
Within two weeks I'd found a candidate in a dealership on the Gold Coast, had it inspected, done all my checks for service history, warranty, recalls, etc, beat the price down about $5K from original listing and transferred the cash.

So she's on a truck with a 2400km journey ahead before it lands at my door.

The Liberty will get 1 last camping trip before the new bus arrives, then it's out with the lift kit, back on with the 18's and needs to be sold.

It's been a fun journey so far and there should be plenty more to come.
New mods planned for the camper with the fitment of gas rings, Jerry holders, sliding rails for the heavy gear and Tropical Roof to the tent to keep the heat off.

plus plenty to do to the fozz,
1" Subtle Body Lift (I'm not adding a spring lift to stock struts, this is to maintain sufficient droop)
Pedders HD Standard height springs, KYB ExcelG shocks
Some sort of 16" OEM rim and AT Tyres
I'd like a nudge bar similar to the one fitted to my Green NA ^^^ that integrates the lower skid-plate..
and some Rock-sliders to protect the door sills.
Xrox in WA make some awesome gear, amate has a fully kitted out PX Ranger, just nothing for the Forester yet.

Fun times ahead

Looking good! :) Can't wait to see her with the BFGs on!!!

Me too,

waiting for these wheels from Japan is Killing me

Finally,

BFG's should be in stock at the tyre place and these can all go on next week

You going for KO1 or KO2? I heard that KO2 was available in our size now!
Edit: LT215/65R16 has been announced but no pricing yet....

the good old K01
$170 a corner is hard to go past

225/65/16 would be optimum

Wheels and tyres fitted finally.

Forgot how noisy the AT's are in a generally quiet car
But i'm in the middle of adding OEM Bytul sound deadening to the doors, rear panels, the boot floor and wheel arches.

2x sheets this size per door,
they no longer sound like an aluminium can when you close them

Looking awesome with the BFGs on!!! Mine are extremely noisy on the road too, we've recently changed the exhaust to make it a little quieter and you can really hear the tyres on the road now!

Looking great!!!

Had the BF AT's, were getting even noisier after half tread wear. Changed to the General Grabber AT's…even more capable off road despite the look and nearly as quite as a road tire. But they wear out faster...

Last night's efforts,

ECB nudge bar
I've got a SubaXtreme bash plate coming for it,
once that's fitted up I'm going to fit a skid plate and extra bracing to the nudge bar to protect the lower radiator support and that section of the bumper.
if you're going to hit an animal or the top of a rut, it's going to be right in the middle

Sounds great.
That's exactly the reason I went for the subaxtreme bar, for the extra lower and side support, but the nudgebar is great for a more minimalistic approach.

Even then the subaxtreme bashplate gives tonnes of lower protection, i've hit plenty of ruts with it. But great point on strengthing up the radiator support, even with the bashplate and bullbar, that is still vulnerable as you can see in this photo.

Bashplate Arrived,
looking at it and wondering if it'll clear the nudge-bar...
the ECB bard sit a ways inward of the factory tow-hooks

Robbks I looked at doing what you are now doing with my wife's SH and came to the conclusion the ECB bar won't fit with a Subaxtreme guard. Suggest (and maybe a bit late) get the Subaxtreme nudge bar that mounts off the front.

I had a good look at it last night and if anything all i'd need to do is shorten the bar where it runs under the car a little on the inside which is purely cosmetic material anyway

Roof Racks and basket on today

2015-04-29%2013.27.47.jpg

<3 the look of this Foz!!! Starting to look really beasty now :)

Lowered something on the Fozz yesterday.

the roof basket.. :D

It's now hung underneath the cross-bars instead of sitting perched up high on top of them,
just having some new Ally plate clamps made that aren't so enormous in every direction.

but here's the general fitment

The brackets I'm making up will be a simple saddle underneath the main support bars on the basket which run front to rear,
And then two straps that run over the bar. this just ensures the main bars are still supporting any weight and not the small cross-bars of the basket

the rear "hoop" now sits down hard on the side rails and the front sits nicely down inside, Will get a full pic once it stops raining

2015-05-04%2013.15.19.jpg

... more pics would be nice.

I've struggled a bit with a similar issue with my Rhino bars and wire basket on my outback.

The bars are 3-4" higher than the roof rails, so the whole lot sits quite high. I've tossed up just clamping the basket directly to the rails - but haven't done it because of the risk of dropping the basket on the roof when mounting it (its pretty heavy and awkward), and the lack of rubber protection between basket and rail.

I picked up a pair of slimline OEM cross rails the other day from a wrecker, so I reckon I have no reason to use the Rhino bars any more.

Here's the old setup

LNGVkfm8GAUC9mJ0FJJXGPHl-yieyl9PDN2cApumpQ=w1391-h895-no

What you'd need to do on the wire basket is cut one square of the wire out to allow the rack to be threaded through the basket.
But your basket is wider than your side-rails so you can't gain anymore than just sitting it on the lower, clip-on ones
