Robs Subaru Journey

Way back when I was 21 (10+ years now) I did a bit of offroading in a 96 Pathfinder, V6.
petrol prices started to bite hard so the Pathfinder made way for a 97 NA Forester was deemed good enough for the odd bush track, and lugging around my camping gear.

I stumbled accros an article in Hot4's magazine (I think) on the GTRydaz National Meet,
this was the beginning of the end for ever owning an unmodified car again..
So the NA made way for a stock as a rock 98 GT

(the day I sold the NA)

CarPIX63.jpg

The GT firstly went up about 20mm on some HD Pedders springs, got some more power from a TD04, Exhaust, tune and all the other parts we could throw at it, Then it went down to a sensible road height.

(just before I sold it)

Along the way I got tied up with the RS Liberty Club and fell in love with a mean Black TT Legacy, when it eventually came up for sale, I had to have it.

2 years of pain and anguish in modifiying and maintaining the tempremental TT system, but in the end I got it there with a full ECU loom rewire to accept the later model ECU to run the later model EJ20R that had been replaced by the last owner.
I figured once it was running fine, I'd sell it and move away from Turbo's (yes a Twin-Turbo does that to a man) and search out a H6

While it was for sale, I did a track-day with the RSCLC National Meet in Tassie :lildevil:

With that out of the driveway, the 06 3.0R-B was getting some love,
swapped the rims for GTB 18's, ECU tune, quad-tip STi mufflers, 7" tablet install for navigation, music, etc, TunedBy STi struts and springs, etc,

Along came a great idea to get out of the old tent and fit an Oztrail Camper6 Top to my 6x4 trailer.

After a few trips it became apparent that 150mm ground clearamce was an issue

2014-11-06%2021.02.46.jpeg

So I fitted some 1' Lift Blocks to maintain the great handling and load carrying of the STi billies and pink springs, and some Outback 17's with higher profile tyres to smooth out the ride and add further lift.
all in all I gained almost 50mm extra clearance which has done the job so far, but still makes some more serious back-roads a challenge, combined with the long wheelbase and long overhangs of the Gen4, any snad-work is tough going.
So here she sits today

2015-01-24%2015.54.36.jpg

Somewhere I toyed with the idea of going skywards again, so the hunt for an 08-10 Pathfinder began, nothing turned up within my price-range that was any good or under 1 million km's, so the idea of a lightly Lifted SH Diesel Forester dawned on me.
Within two weeks I'd found a candidate in a dealership on the Gold Coast, had it inspected, done all my checks for service history, warranty, recalls, etc, beat the price down about $5K from original listing and transferred the cash.

So she's on a truck with a 2400km journey ahead before it lands at my door.

The Liberty will get 1 last camping trip before the new bus arrives, then it's out with the lift kit, back on with the 18's and needs to be sold.

It's been a fun journey so far and there should be plenty more to come.
New mods planned for the camper with the fitment of gas rings, Jerry holders, sliding rails for the heavy gear and Tropical Roof to the tent to keep the heat off.

plus plenty to do to the fozz,
1" Subtle Body Lift (I'm not adding a spring lift to stock struts, this is to maintain sufficient droop)
Pedders HD Standard height springs, KYB ExcelG shocks
Some sort of 16" OEM rim and AT Tyres
I'd like a nudge bar similar to the one fitted to my Green NA ^^^ that integrates the lower skid-plate..
and some Rock-sliders to protect the door sills.
Xrox in WA make some awesome gear, amate has a fully kitted out PX Ranger, just nothing for the Forester yet.

Fun times ahead

Certainly an eclectic mix, mate ... :poke: :iconwink:.

May your new beastie serve you well .

Has your OzTrail Camper 6 got the silvered roof canvas like mine?

Love your variety of Subarus over the years!! :)

I also have a Diesel Forester but mine is the MY12 model.

Hmm you gotta tell me where that camp spot is looks allright, I have one myself in the lakes region of Tassie but its like a secret fishing spot dont like sharing it lol.:iconwink:

That's just Little Beach Reserve up past Bicheno.
about 12 months after some big storms that completely flooded the joint
it used to be dirty balck sand and grass, then the storms/ tides dumped in about 100 tonnes of nice clean quartzy sand.

doesn't get a lot of use from idiots as there's no toilets.

Cool thanks for that, yes unfortunately used to love camping on the esperance river just out from Dover until some idiots harrassed myself and fiance at night, we quickly packed up and never came back, police werent interested, so nowadays its mostly up to Interlaken where my picture is taken, downside is that its cold (freezing) and snakes in summer, but love it so peaceful.

Can't wait to see what you will do with it! Would be awesome to get some Xrox gear for the subaru! If you are interested in side sliders Primitive racing(in america) makes them, i've got a lot of my stuff from them and they are great. I haven't gone for the primitive racing side sliders as they would reduce clearance, which is something I am not willing to sacrifice. My plan is to remove/cut the plastic molding below the door sill, and integrate sliders into that and the pinch welds.

Inspected rego'd and out on the open road.

Have done 400km this last weekend, up the coast, round some sh!tty forestry roads and am getting the hang of helming a boat again.. :D

theres a few things that annoy me about the car
build quality is a big step down from the Gen4 Liberty
Those things were built to compete with Audi, BMW. The SH fozz was competing with a Hyundai Santa-Fe
The doors sound horrible when they shut, all my other Subies had a nice solid thud, this sounds like throwing a coke can on the floor. Some sound deadener should sort that though and a few rattles from the boot floor pieces, but nothing some new foam won;t fix.
Passenger seat has no adjustment in height and no electrics, my wife is 5'3" and can hardly see over the bonnet
no adjustable Lumbar support on any seat.

aside from that, now I've worked out what gear you need to be in, and that you can't skip gears easily due to the torque hole under 1600rpm, it's a pretty fun car to drive,
eats up the highway KM's very easily, not fatiguing to drive
the electric power steering is very nice, has enough weight to provide good feedback, but it seems to dampen out any kick-back on rough ground and just keep the wheel pointed where you need to go.

Lift-off oversteer on smooth gravel is great fun and really easy to control when you've got the stability control turned off, which is also a very easy, "one press" of the button.
other cars I've driven require a long press to disable it, which can be a pain if you're already in a rough patch.

But so far, 400km down, 7.4L/100km and I've been up it all the way and only used half a tank of juice.

Have started the mods with the 2010 WRX mufflers fitted up yesterday
No real not increase, there was actually barely any exhaust nose without any mufflers on it.
But they look cool.

Next up will be getting the Boost and Water Temp gauges in it (as Subaru decided we don;t need to know the water temps.....)
And fit the mud-flaps

Have also got a bid on some 16" Speedline wheels from Japan.
16x7 +48

photochop... :D

yeah the doors don't thud very well, it sounds a bit dissatisfying. Wheels look like they should fit good.

My SG doors make the same satisfying thud that my '93 Impreza doors did.

I tell everyone that SWMBO's SH has the "accountant pack" of non-extras! That's where the accountants from GM move in and remove all sorts of niceties that my SG has that have mysteriously vanished from our SH ...

The SH is a better car and family car in some respects, but I prefer my SG ... :poke:.

flaps n stuff

Look good, Rob.

They don't get caught up in the tyres when reversing?

Not had any issues with the ones on my Lib, (except the front outside one scraping the ground when on the track at Baskerville... :D )

They're a very sturdy material

So I've bitten the bullet and placed my order for the BFG's after taking some measurements and PM'ing just about every SH owner that's running them

If they scrub the rears once the lift kit goes in, then I'll look at making more clearance of doing something with the rear trailing arms/ spacers, etc
or just forget the lift

Won the SPeedlines on Yahoo Auctions too..
just have to wait patiently until they show up

I'm not convinced on the subframe spacer,
moving the whole diff lower, etc

Have searched around a bit and found another SH with the same BFG tyres and the 1" Subtle lift kit.

Clearance looks good.

Got a few things on the go at the moment.

#1 is working with the dealer who sold me the car to get the Centre diff fixed,
after 50km or so of driving the Viscous Coupling gets hot and turns into a locker.
Have had the same problem with 2 other cars I've owned.

But I found a set of OEM Flares for sale cheap
So I'm in the process of fitting them up

2015-03-24%2008.30.37.jpg

And also have fitted my Galaxy Tablet to some custom mounts that attach inside the centre aircon vents
This allows all my music plus Navigation, OBDII apps, etc to operate

The good news also is that My Liberty (Legacy) Has sold and the extra cash lying around can go to good use on this car!!
