New tyres for SH Diesel Foz

Gidday TVG

Well took me a while to decide on what to get but I settled on Bridgestone D697's in 215/70R16 size. Have only had them on the tarmac so far but I'm liking them. Nice and quiet, good grip in the dry and wet... just need to get them into some sand and some dirt tracks to see how they go. Quick pic just after I picked up the car.

I had a long talk to my two mates up at the local Bridgestone shop today, as SWMBO's SH needs new booties fairly soon. The Geolandar G95 have about 1.5 mm until they hit the safety bars. I am informed that there is another 4 for 3 sale coming up in March ... I will be buying 4x Turanza ER300 for her car (225/55 17), and will have them fitted and a 4 wheel alignment done sometime when the others are a bit more worn.

While I was there, had a chance to closely inspect a D697. Looks like a very nice tyre, and one of the chaps there reckoned that it would suit my needs (touring, towing, on road, off road) to a Tee. He did say they can get clogged in bad mud, but that everything available for our cars suffers from this problem to an equal or greater degree! They are under no illusions as to how I drive! I might be a silly old fart in my late 60s, but there is still an element of hoon boy/boy racer lurking in there ... :lildevil:.

I'm even thinking of flogging my near-new Michelin XM2 tyres for whatever they will fetch, and fitting a set of D697 ... Will have to investigate this further.

There is currently a "set" of three XM2 on Gumtree for $199 ...

I have a set of Bridgestone Turanza ER33 on my XT now. I notice they are one of the original fitments to BMW 3 series and look very similar to the ER300 which I notice are one of the original fitments to Camrys and Aurions. The ER33 is super quiet and a good alround tyre that suits the Forester and I imagine the ER300 will be the same. I do miss the superior wet grip of the Bridgestone Potenza RE002 Adrenalins that I had before but then they were at least $50 a tyre extra too.

RB, aka "old Fart..."
What don`t you like about the Michelins?
I shall soon be in the market for new (6 of) rubber in 215X65X16 size.
Another old fart......

^ :rotfl:

They are excellent, but I've already had one sidewall blow out ... and that was around the suburbs!

I like Michelin - they make BFGs :iconwink:

OK, there's a lot of options, but I need to 100% confirm some fitment from the SH owners
I'll be adding 1" lift spacers too,

Will a 215/70 (+14mm radius over the stock 225/55/17) give me rear wheel arch clearance issues?

I had LT215/70R16 BFG all terrain on with no lift. No rubbing in the rear. Can't tell you a lot about the front since I have a bullbar which gives more clearance in the front of the front wheel well.
After the 1" lift you may need rear subframe spacers since the lift pushes the wheel forward in the rear wheel well, and without the lift the rear wheel was already pretty close to the front of the well. But I dunno, it might fit.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking at fitting,
So cheap at the minute with the runout on the old model

yeah they're on a great price atm. Can't really beat them for the price. They have amazing grip, between them and the VDC can't say i've spun the tires yet.

A little birdie told me that Bridgestone are having another 4 for the price of 3 sale in March ...
Not sure if that's Oz wide, or just Victoria.

That makes the D697 very competitive in price.

Rob, IIWY, I would be inclined to go for 215/65 17 if it avoids the possibility of hassles and or clearance issues. Any particular reason for going to 215/70 17?

One thought that occurs to me is the increase in unsprung weight. Also greater inertia of the much larger tyre. What is the weight difference?

215/70r16 is the smallest 16" BFG make for the All terrain.
The benefit of the D697 is you can stay with the stock rims, and they are a lot better onroad due to the tread and as RB said, less unspring weight.

Same tyre

""I didnt do a lift but the bigger tires do raise it about 1". I only get rubbing when doing so really hard cornering in it.""

yeah that's furto over on ozfoz, his rig is very nice.
My bullbar must have stopped the rubbing when cornering.

Yeah, just realised it was his.

I do like the 697's, my old man has them on his Amarok, and we've got a few 70 Series cruisers at work running them,
After we destroyed a heap of Cooper AT2's

Last quote I had on them was about $220 a corner
but with a freebie makes them a good seal

^ Such a good deal that I am very, very tempted to remove my near new Michelins and fit a set. Then sell them for whatever they will fetch s/h. Probably around $250 or so.

Only possible snag for me is fitting the spare in my extremely well reinforced spare wheel well! Actually, I just went for a grovel, and there are only two subsidiary bars supporting the tow bar to the spare wheel well, not 4, as I have previously thought. They are also placed at points where they aren't within the normal tyre circumference. I will have to go and have a trial fit of a 215/65 16 in there.

I really don't want to have to carry a compressor with me at all times because my spare has to be deflated to fit!
