Getting warmer than expected

Thanks fans are working fine. I only have about a 5mm gap between one of the fan stays on the back and the power steering pulley. Rally 4000s nearly blocked the entire grill they are around 9inches across to big. I made up a new grill by bending some of that supacheap alumium mesh without strengthening with spot lights and had a spirited drive in testing stayed strait without spotties reached about same speed and pushed in. The reason I done this is standed grill is buggerd. It also run 4 to 5 deg c cooler so im pretty shore I found problem. I would like to fine some mesh wich is more open.

yeah, sounds like the spotties was the problem. 9" is pretty big lol.

Something that Venom discovered is the radiator needs decent space behind it for the air to flow through properly. Not sure what you can do though, he's going a custom job

Ok yea im thinking of taking about 5 to 10mm of the face of the fan gards that buts up to the radiator and see if I can make a couple of other changes just need to pull the radiator and do some measuring again. If that doesn't work ill look at putting some fans on the front and blow through.

Thanks Dulagarl I have got a rather large hole where yours has 2 I put some of that alumium mesh from supa cheap in there to protect radiator off road but I think it is way to small in holes and not letting enough flow through going to take it out and try to find some with larger holes

This is front of car I have changed back to oem grill

I found that the orientation of the super cheap mesh made a difference. It needs to catch air flowing over the bumper, rather than let air flow over it. In my initial pic I had it the wrong way so I reversed it some time later.

Another thing that might help is an aero spec grille. There are some on ebay. Not cheap, but probably what you are after.

100 degrees is not bad. I have a watchdog temp alarm, and its a good investment. Some others on here have a scan gauge: also a good investment.

Well I finally found the problem. It was a faulty Thermostat which now has its cuts cut out. It was a gates high flow thermostat which I tested before installing. Was all good put in and over norm temp got worse and worse checked when pulled out didn't open at all just must of been unlucky and got faulty one. Ill see how it goes over winter if it stays to cool with no guts ill get a new one. At this time seems good.

Hmmm !!!
Told you that on 21 November :)
Been there many times before. On one occasion I was near Dubbo NSW had to pull the thermostat out belt it with hammer so would stay open then reinstalled it
Great that the problem is solved.

You shore did havachat thanks. Have you had any problems with having it going strait through. I do take it easy till it gets to temp

The downside of fixing the thermostat in the full open position was that it took the car which wasn't a Subaru a lot longer to warm up, but that was better than the alternative !

Having a properly working thermostat is important!

It makes the engine warm up faster (not just about saving fuel, it reduces engine wear & stops the oil being diluted by the extra fuel, not a good thing!)

With a gutted thermostat, water will circulate too quickly, reducing how much heat is absorbed by the engine & how much is radiated in the radiator. Its an old school approach that works in the short term, but onl to get to the next parts store.

Only use a genuine Subaru thermostat made by Subaru, designed by Subaru, for Subaru engines. Then you won't have any issues :poke:

... almost true.

I had a sticky thermostat recently, so ordered the correct OEM part from Subaru. Problem was it wouldn't fit. there is a key notch in the thermostat housing, and the side frame of the thermostat is supposed to slot into it. Mine didn't. I checked and rechecked the part number. It seems Subaru have discontinued the OEM thermo for the H6 and are now using the same for 2.5 litre engine, which opens about 5 degrees cooler. That's all OK I suppose, but I had to take to the thing with a dremel to make it fit.

Other than that I tend to agree re OEM thermostats. Take one look at them compared to after market, and they just look a lot more robust.

270,000km and 18 year old original thermostate, cant say anything about aftermarket, but can say the subaru ones seem pretty dam goods. Can't say the same for my radiator atm though.

Ok idw yea I got 210,000km on mine and nine year old. Mainly put new thermostat in cause replaced radiator as bottom tank was weeping. Upgraded to thicker core and full aluminium. New hoses as well. It hasent been taking that much longer to get up to operating temp still between the two middle lines on temp gauge. don't think flow would be that much more as still has same size hole just doesn't have to open up. When I get to suby dealer I will get new thermostat though

First chance to update. Put in a new oem thermostat no problems. Open highway sits on 88-89 deg hottest I have seen it was 92 following traffic on motorway. So all good now new front drive shafts and oil seals beacause of buggerd cvs lol never ends hehe

Subies can be touchy with some things, the thermostat is one. Some things you just have to go genuine.

Yeah, CVs don't last forever unfortunately lol

That's good news, Corsa. Having these things fixed makes a car a real pleasure to drive again .
