Anyone been up to Cape York?

Thanks guys! So we shall leave the van in Hervey Bay most likley. Cape we will just wing it. I beleive one of the cars coming will be a bog stock VY commodore sedan which is now my main concern. . .

^ Better luck sailing it up there than driving it there, perhaps?

It will probably prove us all wrong :poke: :iconwink:.

What will probably kill it is the ground clearance rather than anything else. After all, think of all the places one can easily drive a ten ton truck. Not because it's got 4WD, but because it's got LOTS of ground clearance ...

My Impreza had the same problem as the Commodore.
Leaving aside the fact that it was utterly gutless as well.

Not sure if you guys will get over to Iron Range (near Lockhardt River township) however, if you do, check out the impact (still) of Operation Blowdown where 50 ton of TNT was used to simulate a 10 kiloton air burst in 1963. Very scarred landscape, it's quite eerie!

Haha, we shall see what happens. I have been informed that the person doesn't know yet!

Hmm that sounds good Kevin! Id like to see that and im sure the others will too.

People make Cape York up to be something more than it is. I grew up on Thursday Island in the 90's, and every Christmas we would drive to Brisbane in our Peugeot 504. We even went up there with a box truck full of all our stuff when we moved there. There were river crossings that would be an issue if it had rained a lot recently. The Land Cruiser drivers (and there were a lot of them) were always wading in to check the depth. If you had a lightweight car like an L-Series or a 504, you could just aquaplane across.

The roads are way better now than they used to be then, so an AWD car going up there now is not an issue.

Welcome aboard!

I agree - getting there the easy way on the development roads is usually not an issue these days. But doing the OTT and OTT North is a different issue; in it's current shape I doubt any Foz would get through Palm Creek Crossing (either of them) and it's at the start of the OTT.

no problem

I worked up at Wolverton Station about 16/18 k's north of the Archer as a 15 yr old in 1970.
Went back up in 07 with youngest son in 03 Patrol.
To Coen will be straightforward, a lot of bitumen now.
From Coen north steady / steady and if it gets to tough leave the van at one of the Stations on the way and do the last bit with vehicle alone.
If it's the trip of a lifetime [especially for the oldy's, and I'm one of them] then it seems a shame not to do the last bit. Plenty of accomodation up there although you should probably book.
