Anyone tried these bash plates?

^ Yes. It adds value to the agreed sum insurance.

DON'T call it a "bash plate" ... :iconwink: .
Call it a "sump guard", and point out that it decreases the likelihood of the insurer having to pay out for accidental damage to your car due to road conditions ....

I have found that most things come down to how one describes something, rather than what it might be! :rotfl:. Crazy, but true.

You do not need to provide the compliance certificate (unless they specifically ask for a copy, of course). All SubaXtreme sump guards (and other bits too, AFAIK) are air bag/ADR compliant. Always keep all receipts for accessories, servicing, repairs, etc.

I make it a habit in these increasingly litigious times to take photographs from all angles about once a year, after we give our cars their annual wash ... :) . These should include photos of extras, and both internals as well as exterior shots. Takes less than five minutes to do, and will tend to shut the gob of the most pedantic loss adjuster ... I have dealt with some doozies in that profession over my long life!

A short list of the items on our policy documents:

1) OEM tow bars

2) Sheepskin seat covers

3) floor mats

4) the OEM stereos (there are many different versions of these - the ones in our cars were a $1,300 extra)

5) fog lights (not standard on all cars)

6) both cars are described as "XS", not just as "Forester" ...

7) SWMBO's tranny is specifically mentioned as 4EAT with Sportshift, as some models did not come with the Sportshift auto, and it was significantly more expensive.

8) the spare wheels get a mention, as both are alloy. Roo2 came with a steel spare as standard. The matching alloy spare cost me $195. RR came with the alloy spare as standard, but some cars didn't.

9) the Momo steering wheel in RR gets a mention (extra cost)

10) both cars have cargo barriers (around $650-$850 fitted ... )

11) the sump guard now fitted to my car (Roo2) is yet to go on the policy.

IOW, list everything ...

Same goes for my camper trailer.

Full, written disclosure and listing (with an agreed value for each item) will save lots of problems later. If your car is stolen and torched, its condition is whatever a loss adjuster says it is ... UNLESS you have the photos, service records, etc, etc.

Roo2 and RR are still insured for an agreed value of about what we paid for them 2.75 and 2 years ago respectively.

I remain in an amicable relationship with my insurer/s ... :).

Sweet man! Thanks for the advice, it will prove golden if I ever need it. I got the guard in the mail today, so Saturday is fitting day! I'll ring them tomorrow and make sure it's added on!

Congrats BM.

Could you take some photos of the spacers for your guard before you fit it please?

Being s/h, mine came with bolts and washers, but no spacers. I found that I needed to make two spacers about 6mm thick for the front and 8mm for the rear.

I don't know if these were necessary because my guard is a bit beaten up, or whether it normally has spacers between the guard and chassis at these points.

As regards the other, glad to be of help.
I'm against anyone who attempts to deceive insurers, but I am equally against having an insurer take advantage of the insured ...

If we are all honest with each other, the World cannot but help be a better place for us all ... :poke:.

I just wrote this up in OzFoz and added in the spacers for ya man. :iconwink:
Forgive me for I haven't got any vernier calipers.

How many mm thick are the subaextreme ones? I'm also worried about the aluminium not being strong enough. My mechanic Marty at Ignite Mechanical and Custom in Brissie said that he would be able to custom make me one to any thickness I like for just a couple of hundred bucks which I'm thinking might be a good deal.

I've just got mine in the mail for my SH9, because it's cast the thickness varies but the average of mine seems to be around 6-7mm (around the centre of the guard) and there is definitely some weight in it. I haven't fitted it yet but it definitely feels it will be plenty strong enough for the use of most people on this forum (unless you're planning on seriously SMASHING it) it should be good enough for typical Forester off-roaders.

The airbag compliance is a very big deal if you (touch wood) ever have a crash. Because you could then not be covered by your insurer.

Thanks BM.

Will study tomorrow, as knackered and going to bed now.

Thanks again for your effort... :).

Thanks for the photos and measurements, BM :). Most helpful.

While it's obvious that the MY09/10 guard is a little different from the MY06/07 one, it is equally obvious that one needs to have spacing washers between the guard and the body mount points.

I made some up by welding 1/2" (hole diameter; ~2mm thick each) galvanised washers together after working out the number needed to get a decent clearance between the guard and the bottom of the sump in particular. I then added one to each stack to give a little extra clearance between the exhaust shields and the guard, particularly on the D/S of my SG. Mine now seems to have appropriate clearance all round.

I will have a look at their suggestion for cutting the ABS engine bay guard to make wings for the sides to see if it will be of any benefit with the SG. I have two of these, one of which has one of the front bolt holes torn, so could happily sacrifice that one to the experiment.

Nice work, no worries on the pics!

I really want to cut up my plastic guard too, but might scope out what it costs to buy a used one in-case for whatever reason I need to go back to stock. It'll be good to see if the side splash guards work on the SG as well
