My money says they're the original plugs from the factory.

I'll take that one on, too!

Flaming surprised that the engine was running at all ... :puke:.

Having said that, I had the same plugs in my '93 Impreza for about 100K kms ... It was supposed to have the plugs changed every 12,500 kms, IIRC.
Seemed to run OK though, if a bit sluggish at over 160 kmh :iconwink:.

Make sure you get the right plugs for it, and NGK only, IME. Should be Platinum tipped ones. I think they are standard for the EJ-253 engine.

You call that worn?

This is worn...

This was one of mine, judging by the way the hardest one to get too was the most worn I'd say that one was original, yes I did have a small miss, but the Subaru was still running pretty well.

Yeah, you win on gap there RedXS, but at least yours still has a ground electrode! Mine is eroded off at 45 degrees and down to half its thickness! I'll try and get a better pic. The line down the porcelain really is something too. Can't scratch it off with a fingernail. Never seen anything like it (and I've seen a lot when doing antenna design). Wonder if the internal resistor has gone high-impedance. Will compare it with the others and a new one when I get to do the changeover on Monday night.

(Plug replacement is a whole 'nother story in itself. Had to order in replacement NGK platinums today, none anywhere in stock this weekend. Bunged in a "standard" plug in the interim. Could not get the plugs out when I replaced the seals, didn't have the right socket. Finally got that this morning and used an adaptor, a (short) extension, a universal joint, another (long) extension and finally the ratchet. That's worthy of a pic too.)

Thing is, the previous owner said that the cam belt was done at the correct 100,000k service and I took his word for it at the time, but then in a fit of suspicion rang the company that did the service and their records confirm the belt change, but if they've not done something as simple as a plug change, how can I trust what I've been told? I guess the company's got no reason to lie to me, heck, quite the opposite really, they might pick up more work on the car. Just for peace of mind I think I'll put a new belt on the to-do list.

Funny really, it was the solid maintenance record on this car that really swung it for me. Looked at a couple of others, but this seemed the best. S'pose if this is the worst it's going to chuck up then I really shouldn't complain.

And yet here again I see why I love Subarus. BessieF to her credit... has been soldiering on ... and on ... and on....! If in doubt bout your belt.. just Nike it.

Best regards,

When the old belt came out of Roo2 at 110,000 kms, it still looked like it was brand new. It was nearly 8 y.o.

Lucas (at Lucas Automotive) told me that I had no need to worry about the timing belt, regardless of what's said. He said he had seen them 20 y.o. and still looking as good as new! Of course, none of us want ours to break; but what Lucas is saying is that they don't, by and large.

If the service bloke has told you they did it, as he has, then make a file note of this and sign and date it. Even better, get him to print off a duplicate service invoice for you with the previous owner's details blanked out, but the rego number on it.

+1 for getting a copy of the invoice. I believe in keeping it simple so don't confuse the guy by asking him to blank out anything. Simply ask for a copy to be faxed or mailed to you :iconwink:

You may also want to get a new complete set of leads. While your playing in the engine bay, do the fuel filter as well
