Forester XT Offroad/Lift help.

Depending on how many kms your car has (eg if struts are worn and due replacing) I'd get a 2" sumo lift block kit

re rust prevention it depends how serious you want to go. Assuming you dont already have any rust I'd just fish oil the poop out of it (this is what I did)

Make sure the underbody has no exposed metal where the protection has worn or been scratched off, thats how rust starts. Then just fill everywhere with fish oil

It's Done 157,000kms. No rust. :)

A few people i have spoken with reckon i should wait till the Forester is a bit older before taking it beach??
I originally planned to get an old Cheap Brumby with a 2'lift for weekend beach/camping trips, but couldn't find one cheap enough without HEAPS of rust. So decided to look at options for the forester. :)

Providing you stay above the tide line, don't have any bare metal and wash your car after each beach run you shouldn't have any rust problems. It's only if you go onto the (usually) firmer wet sand or if your throwing dripping wet beach gear in the back that you'd want some rusted out Brumby.

A long time ago, a friend in Brisbane (next door neighbour) had an Austin Champ. It was in immaculate condition. He used it on the beach all the time (Double Island Point, etc).

After each and every trip, he would wash its underside very well with fresh water, then spray it with engine oil. It never had any rust.

As Red and others have said already, being meticulous about the care and maintenance of your vehicle in all respects is the secret of longevity of both body and mechanicals - relatively meticulous, that is; no need to be paranoid about things ...

I use this ERPS on both cars: https://www.erps.com.au/

I was a sceptic when I installed in the Foz years ago. It's now 14 years old, has been swamped by waves on Fraser, in salt water and beaches often and when everyone queues up for the after-beach wash, I just drive home (even from Queensland) - and no rust even where I have drilled holes.

Yeah, i might be a bit paranoid about rust. lol I really enjoy the car.
But i guess whats the point in having a great all rounder car and not use it. :)

Bought a bash plate yesterday, so this Sunday taking my Foz on the beach stock, and see how see performs before I chuck the lift on. :)

Good on ya, always good to see how it performs stock, it should do better then you'd expect. Plus, you'll be able to see how much lift you want and you'll have a bench mark to see how much future mods improve your car.

Exactly. As for the rust, you are right to be very careful about this. When my '93 Impreza had the windscreen replaced at around 10 y.o., the guy damaged the paint around the frame. The rust didn't start to appear until about 6-7 years later. It cost me $1,000 to have the windscreen removed (gratefully, it didn't break when removed ... ), the rust cut out and the frame remade in about 5-7 places (one really major one that had started to form a rust cancer on the P/S w/s frame). Of course, the front frame and roof of the car need to be re-sprayed.

One really bad mistake made by lots of people is to use ordinary household detergent to wash their car. These all contain salt in varying amounts, and some even contain bleach (acid ... ).

Always use a proper car wash that contains carnauba wax. Use this before waxing or polishing, as it penetrates into all the nooks and crannies, helping to slow down or prevent rust from forming in the hidden crevices of the car.

Same goes for car polish. Look for the one that contains the highest amount of carnauba wax (this is the only expensive ingredient ... ). This will usually be the most expensive polish, but not always!! I am still using a big tin of Porzelack that I paid a King's ransom for 25 years ago. I have another unopened one, and a third very high grade one that I inherited from my Dad-in law. He never used it. Porzelack polish was the one recommended by Rolls Royce ...

The tin is unchanged since I bought mine ...

That's a good idea, as Red has said.

Thanks guys. :)

Hit the beach this afternoon with a few mates(Hilux and Navara).

Was GREAT FUN, had no trouble at all, even left my tyres with 36psi to see if i could get stuck. lol. I Didn't get stuck.

Even tried to pull the Hilux out, but i didn't have the heart to Really push the Foz, i still love it to bits. Mixed Feelings... lol :)

Will keep you posted.

I agree with that approach. I will always take the chicken run. An attitude reinforced by many years of towing a horse float full of horses. Then there was no room for unnecessary risks; or error ...

My SG Forester replaced my nearly 18 y.o. Impreza that I had since new.
I also "love it to bits". I don't want to damage it. Doing things that the vehicle is patently not designed to do when one doesn't absolutely have to will usually damage it. Doing these things "for fun" is something that doesn't appeal to me. Not criticising or being judgemental about those who do, but one needs to understand and accept the inevitable outcome/s if one chooses this path.

There is not the slightest shame in being careful of things that we are all flaming lucky to have at all.
Most of us are rich beyond the wildest dreams of 99% of humanity for about 99% of human history.
It is a good thing to have an appreciation of this simple fact, and appreciate and care for those things that we can so easily take for granted ...

Glad that you are happy with your Forester ... . Me too :iconwink:.

Got the My Sump Guard on Friday! :D
Went on the Sand Pits and beach on Sunday with it and went Really well!
All the other 4x4's where So Surprised! :D
Will post a video Soon when i get time to edit it. So stay tuned!

That's great! Good to hear your enjoying your Subaru so much. I like the faces I get well I cruise past other struggling 4wd's. Foresters are a great sand car, but others don't need to know that. And I'll try to keep mine looking as close to stock as possible for extra confusion.

Can't wait to see the videos!

Not much video, but at least you get the idea! Got my own action camera the other day, so will be able to film from My Forester next time. :)
