Toying With The Idea Of a Gen4 H6

Gidday Tony

A mate has an H6 3.0L. He tows a glider with it all over the country. I don't think it would be anywhere as heavy as a 16' van, but not a fly weight like my trailer, either. This is his second H6 OB. OTOH, he does very little off road work, other than glider recovery. He is more than happy with the OB, and the H6.

Alot of the modern 16ft vans are very light 1300kg Tare etc and you can only put another 300kg in them so they fall inside the cars specs (me being conscious of ball weight of course), i also might go smaller in length of the van but i dont think bigger, having said that Jurgens have an 18ft van that weighs in at 1300kg with an ATM of 16ookg and a ball weight of 130kg.

The 3.0 was a nice engine for the OB, if not so much for the B9. I find the 3.6 still a bit on the weak side on the Beca, but it rocks on the OB. It does not turn it into a sports car but going up steep freeway grades at 115F, fully loaded, is an effortless exercise.

How about a smaller and lighter pop-top, fold-out type?

Far less frontal area, so much better fuel economy and performance, all other things being equal (they never are ... :iconwink: ).

I have a Jayswan camper at the moment, we want a solid van for quick stops and easy setups, the smaller vans are just too small for 2 but ok for one even though we are outside most of the time and never cook in the camper.

I need to sort the tug 1st, then i can work out what i can and cant tow.

Just added the VW TD5 4 Motion Van to the list

2 tonne towing capacity, a great tourer with some limited offroad ability
(they say that about the Subarus), can be lifted and some come with a 30mm lift, AT Tyres fitted, plenty of bullbars etc available and they go better than most people think offroad.

Price is a killer, about the cost of an Outback when new, and the 7 speed Auto is apparently not happy Jan in heavy traffic.

I would be able to take this away detecting for days at a time and live in it and still be able to handle some of the worst tracks in the goldfields.

The worst thing about looking at cars is you find more that fit the criteria.

Still there are some nice bargains on Outbacks.
