Catchya's Dak..Dak XT Forester

Hey everyone.

In my search for a decent off roader, I stumbled on this little Forester that needed some urgent attention. After a quick discussion with the board of director (my wife), approval was given to pursue on the provision that I would not sell for quick profit.

Deal was done and later that day my new daily sat in the driveway.

Previous owners had modded the car with an unknown larger intercooler, GFB blow off valve, aftermarket cold intake and 3" full exhaust system including dump pipe. Owner also gave us the tow bar and bike rack attachment :)

Leather interior, carpets and matts are still in excellent condition, everything works as it should although I have a temperamental drivers electrical window switch. Paint work is ok. No clear coat peeling but there are lower side skirts scratching, the odd small dent and paint chips.

Ok that's the good now the bad.

The EJ255 no 4 cylinder has a broken ringland, compression 50psi. Front CV boots completely stuffed and front brake pads almost down to bare metal.

So to get my daily on the road in the shortest amount of time, a new 08 EJ255 was sourced and installed by Fats at Japanese Wholesale, 2 new front CV boots/joints replaced as well as the front brake pads. Sourced and installed the stock airbox from Japline making the after market cold air intake redundant.

Booked a date with Sean at ASG who uploaded new software and retuned my little baby to now making a healthy 208rwhp (155kilowasps).

The difference in the way she drives now is night and day compared to the stock tune. The above graph shows the interlay between the new tune and stock. ( the intermitted lines is stock).

Now, a mate of mine came over with his mate to show off his new ride, a 2007 LowLux 4wd d4d and also to inspect the Forester. The customary look at the engine, car walk around and quick squirt displaying the new found kilowasps took place. Truth be told as I pulled up to my driveway, my mates mate made a stand up offer to purchase the car.

The offer meant that I made good profit on this car but I declined remembering the last incident watching my normally subdue wife grow into a raging tyrant with the last vehicle purchased  and sold.

Anyways, to take my family to the beach, have fun down some tracks, to meet new people with similar cars is now what it is all about. Sure we will outgrow the forester pretty quickly but it is such a welcome change I don't think I can easily get rid of it.

Future plans and modifications for my dak dak will be purely body and suspension components. this will involve

Suspension lift
Bigger tyres
bash plates including diff
custom front bulbar
custom rear bar with wheel swing away.

Please chime in, happy to share thoughts and ideas.

Looks like I have sorted out which direction I will going suspension wise. After the drug money quotes I have been receiving upon my enquiries for new KYB F/R shocks with raised springs, Ive decided upon this route.

1st phase will be to determine the condition of my shocks and SLS rears. If all good raised springs will be purchased and installed. (Kings or Dobsons)

If no good, new KYB's and raised springs most probably purchased through online sources at half the cost of some of my local suspension outlets.

To the WA lads, if you know of anywhere else to purchase these through any other means ie: trade prices with a kicker of cash your way, please pm me;)

2nd phase will be 2"strut lift with camber and castor correction with TA blocks plus a 1" body lift.

Cheers

Did not go ahead with a custom bullbar but did manage to score myself some early birthday presents last Friday.

Subaxtreme offroad bullbar and sumpguard only one year old and off a white 05 Forester XT Premium....... Perfect :discomonkey:

Fitted the bullbar to this thing today! It's one nice XT, very clean. Top bloke, had a good chat... could of kept talking for hours.
A wicked buy but still doesn't beat my $300 licensed and running 98 SF:raspberry:

Can't wait to do the gearbox job on it and get the lift kit in :iconwink:

Must mention Taza for his electrical skills, knowledge and for giving me a extra hand with the installment on such short notice. Greatly appreciated thanks mate:yourock:

Cheers mate....Cannot compete with a $300 licensed and running bargain, although judging by the smile on your face after that drive in the XT, it certainly does beat it in the thrills department....

Very ice Forrie mate!
Good to see another Allstar fan on here :) Sean's got a special thing for ECU's, I'm going to get him to have a play with mine for my EJ22 once I get around to swapping it in.
Happy wheeling!

Cheers Tom  Hope to catch up soon and put the names to the faces.

Sean from ASG comes highly recommended that's for sure. Most of the WA Subaru rally /Tarmac owners get him to tune their cars and only him for good reason. I know of others who could of done the job using Haltech or AP's but no one in Perth can flash tunes these EJ motors with added reliability like he can.

What ecu are you going to be running?

With my Forrester, stock ECU running the verso software.
With my Supra, Haltech Platinum Sports 2000 Pnp

To be honest, i havent had a good thought about it, i have a stock EJ22 ECU and i know they're quite tuneable so for the first setup i'll stick with that (makes it easier and cheaper)
Later on if i add forced induction i'd think about upping the ECU capability but for now stock should do.
The aim of my tune would be to adjust for the lighter car that is mostly my daily driver, so economy and reliability as a priority.
Not to hijack the thread, but could you elaborate a bit on the Verso software? I really havent much of a clue with car computers, I'm from a carby background!

You can't tune the ej22 ecu. Its a fixed unit and can not be reprogrammed. Same goes with my SF Foz ecu. However I had a piggyback but have found a good way to utilize the standard ecu to run my 2.5.

Your right on the thrill factor! It's a blast, good amount of power for a daily driver.

Tom, let me know if you need a hand with the swap. I'm sure I can get away for a day to come and help... you'll be happy with a ej22 in an L-Series! It'll blow my forester off the road.

It has been a while since I last updated.

Managed to do the first service today on my new motor before picking up the kids from school.

I have yet to buy my new front and rear KYB struts. Waiting on Nachaluva to finish my 2" lift kit first. ;)

I managed to score off Taza, thankyou my friend, a helical front LSD off a pignose STI which was machined (like to like) to the exact specs off another STI diff fitted to a SG 5 speed gearbox.

I am also trying to source a plated rear diff to suit the r160 , 4.44 ratio as replacement for the rear r160 VLSD. Hopefully I will know next Monday but if you know where there is one, send us a pm.

Cheers

I forgot to mention that I have also acquired, but yet to pick up, a complete DCCD with all associated hardware off a 5 speed V4 RA STI. :discomonkey:

I have been talking with Norrie at All Drive Subaru about different gearbox options, combos and availability suited for the kind of 4 wheeling I am wanting to do and have decided that I will progress to low range if needed for my gearbox build.

What I am leaning towards is that the combination of centre DCCD, front STI helical, rear STI plated or Cusco RS 2 way combined with 320 plus Newton metres of torque @ 3800 rpms will get me out of most tricky soft situations.

I could be dreaming  about this combo for the XT, so as usual, let me know what you think!!

Ahh, feel the serenity

Cheers

Should work.. maybe try it and see if you need low range..
You have double the torque of me at 3600rpm and I do most of the sand work fine in high range. Its only taking off in the real soft ****, or snatching someone in the soft **** where it's an issue..
However with a few revs and a heap of torqur it shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah Taz, I reckon it will work. It struggles now because of the open front diff in the soft and tends to dig holes, but whack a helical/torsen or 1 way Cusco in there with the right tyre pressure, I reckon it will be a different story.

Big plus is also the ability to dial in the torque through the DCCD. As you know, I know where there is a 12 kg centre diff but feel this will be better off matched with the 1.447 or 1.59/1.61 ratio low range if a DCCD could not be sourced at reasonable cost.

Should be interesting and cannot wait to be the guinea pig

All sounds good, CY .

This is all happening just so that you can keep your promise to your Minister of Finance that you won't turn it over for a quick profit ... right .... ?? ... :poke: :iconwink:.

:rotfl:

All the best with it, mate.

Have you tried it in the sand already?

Yeah mate I have. In and around that development where I live :lildevil:, much to the frown of my neighbours.

That stupid cannon on the back definitely has to go as it collects everything but I will be tackling that soon.

Cheers Ratbag...You nailed it on the head  although last week I did have it up for sale without her knowing.

Reality is that the car is 1 seat or suitcase too small for 3 growing kids. I have taken the advert down consequently because just like my Supra, it is a cracker of a car to drive. So far it has been extremely versatile for what I do and expect out of the car and besides the kids love it as well.

All that is needed are some slight suspension and driveline improvements.

Cheers

Mate, have a long hard look at the 2008-2010 SH. It is the "family sized" version of my SG. One of my wife's lecturers who is 6'7" can comfortably sit in the rear of her SH, and can get in and out without having any parts of his feet amputated! Wouldn't be the case in my car ...

It also has the EJ-253 donk (the later SH models use the FB engine, and I am yet to be favourably impressed by that engine ... ) and also uses the 4EAT Sportshift auto (ProDrive TCU, with better centre clutch system - watch out for the difference between the standard 4EAT and the Sportshift version), rather than the Lineartronic which I am also not impressed by ... Not sure if it still had a 5MT/DR, as SWMBO very definitely wanted the auto ...

I far prefer my SG, but my SWMBO prefers her SH. I have to admit that the SH is a far better family car than my SG.

Just a few thoughts FWIW ... ;)

Thanks for the suggestion Ratbag :bananatoast:
I will definitely put the 2008-2010 SH Forester on the radar later on next year when the hunt begins.

Here is some DCCD goodness.
