Vic License Expiry

Thanks for the heads-up, NL.

Love the comment by the Police ...

As if one checks one's licence every day for its expiry date, considering they are generally issued for ten years at a time ...

AND I love the double standard implicit in this:

1) We are paid good money to do our jobs, so you mustn't ever blame us for not doing it properly;

vs.

2) You are paying us huge taxes for effectively bugger all services, and it's your fault if we make a balls up of our collection of said taxes ...

Business as usual from government (every single last one of them; this is NOT any kind of party-political statement). They forgot (long ago ... ) that their purpose is to serve us, not the other way round ... :puke: :puke:

My wife is affected by this. She rang VicRoads and was assured that her renewal was in the mail a couple of weeks ago. She then rang again just before it hit the news and was told to go to the VicRoads agency in Healesville and renew it there. Apparently she can do this without paper work so long as she has her old licence with her.

You don't need the renewal slip to pay for the license and wait for it in the mail. As the local copper told me today you do need the slip and issue no. with receipt to claim you've paid for it when they pull you over.

Guys, this is only my opinion, but geez, sometimes I feel sorry for the government... If they tell everyone what to do and what not to do, they get labelled the Nanny State and told to leave everyone alone, we all know better, right?

Then, when they don't send a bunch of letters to remind people of what they should already know, people criticise them for not doing their job...

Maybe time for each individual to take some responsibility over their actions/lives and stop blaming the government for everything?

I received a text about this today (missed the news item), thought it was a scam, and wondered really!. My licence expires 16 February 2016. Right week, wrong year.

As a truck/bus driver, I know my licence number, and expiry by wrote.

Beigewagon.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a licence fee is not a fee for service, it's a tax.

It is the responsibility of the taxing authority (the Victorian Gov't, in this case) to issue an assessment notice in a timely and correct manner. They are well paid to do this, after all - it is their paid employment ... .

As regards the Police - IMNSHO, the Governor in Council should issue a regulatory exemption in favour of all affected drivers until such a time as the correct renewal notice (taxation assessment) has been issued allowing the same time period for payment as would have been the case if the public servants had not made this error.

After all, a licenced driver does not suddenly become incompetent to drive as a result of a failure to pay a tax that has not had the required assessment notice issued in a correct and timely manner ...

We can all make mistakes. It is not the usual practice to penalise the victims of such mistakes ...

Just FWIW.

However its our responsibility, both in law & common sense, to ensure our license, rego, insurance, etc are up to date. As you know, you cant plead ignorance in the eyes of the law, even if it is unfair....

I seem to remember a certain mining company who "forgot" to renew their mining lease on some land. Another certain individual jumped on it that day & went on to become Fortesque Mining! :lildevil:

^ Two quite different things, mate.

It is unbecoming that paid public servants expect us to do their tax collecting for them, when that's what they are being paid to do ...

If it's up to us to tax ourselves, why not cut out the middleman and give them the sack?

BTW, I don't believe the above statement, but it sure as hell isn't right that we pay for their gross errors either.

My licence is due for renewal in about 2 months time, so I could easily have been in a group who are to be penalised by the Police (public servants) for the failure of VicToads staff to do their PAID jobs properly and competently (other public servants ... ).

I think it is Canada (could be somewhere else though) who has the right idea.
All licence's & vehicle rego's are due on your birthday.

The logic behind this is that you won't forget when they are due, because you don't forget when your birthday is.

You certainly wont forget but hellauva birthday present lol

You got that right, but at least you'll know what to ask for or what you'll get from friends & family...... $$$

Here in Holland they made it simpel but definitely not cheaper.

a licence number is valid as long as the car is on the road. We have our annual safety checks and you pay a owners tax when you have a car, for my fozzy that is 80 euro's per month which is taken automatically from your bank account.

Only 10% of this tax is used for building and mantaining roads, the rest?

Simple but not cheap....:madred:

Gidday Casper

Does the 80 Euros/month cover registration, third party injury, licence and inspection?

Here the cost is around AUD $720 p.a. for registration and TPI insurance.
Licence fess are extra.
Number plates are extra.
MV inspections are extra.

And we only get around 10% back, including the cost of Hospital emergency, ambulance, roads, police and policing of motorists. AND we get to pay a toll for many "Freeways" ....

^ HC.

6 monthly renewals and concessions for being a pair of SOFA members means that we get 50% off .... Something at least! :iconwink:

SOFA = Silly Old Farts' Association ... :poke:  :rotfl:

There's even a bumper sticker :lildevil: .

^ Yup. If you qualify for one of the cards that give you 50% off. It all helps.

God knows, it's little enough after all the dough we have given the government at all levels over the years ...
