A new towing vehicle for Bobam

I am towing an old Jayswan with my 2003 NA manual forester, doesnt worry the car one bit, including driving through the Malley with 100k+ headwinds and a dust storm thrown in to boot. The car is fully loaded and the camper has alot of gear in it as well.

Gidday Pokeabout, welcome.
Have found a good and helpful bunch of people here.
Your diesel sounds most desirable especially those torque numbers, but out of my budget I'm afraid.
Refreshing to see what you tow as well My04tone. Have you ever had any overheating issues?
I towed an 8mt boat hull [400kgs] on a 10mt boat trailer [800kgs] with my MY03 auto FozX at 95 kmh for 300 klm's without issue.
Was quite amazed at its ability's.
Also towed a 600kg trailer back from Darwin to Hervey Bay cruising at 130 kph in 42C heat with no hint of trouble.
My job at the time involved a lot of travel so I did 125,000k's in 31 faultless months before I tried to teach it to swim over on the island. My fault entirely! It was standard except for 40mm lift, alloy skid plate and extra lights.
Would still be driving it otherwise.
So I figure the series 2 79v model will be just that bit better.
Still no joy finding one to suit me so will just wait.
Hope everyone had good xmas and has an excellent New Year.
regards

Good luck with the finding, mate. All the best to you and yours as well.

Ratbag,
Did you ever do any research into a strut top lift for the boss's MY09.
There are a few MY09's [under 125k's] around that seem to be better value at the moment. Could consider one of those.

Not a CHANCE, Bob ... :iconwink:  :rotfl:.

She would never even contemplate allowing it ...

A few things to bear in mind about the SH vs the series II SG:

1) The SH is a considerably larger vehicle than the SG. In fact, it is almost identical in size to a Ford Territory. This can be a plus or minus, depending. I prefer my SG, but SWMBO prefers her SH .... The SH has a longer wheelbase than the SG/SF. The extra space is in the passenger room, not the cargo area, which is a bit wider, but little, if any, deeper than that in my SG. The SH also loses a little height in the cargo area due to the 225x55 17" spare, making the boot floor a little higher than it is in my SG - but then, the ceiling is much higher in the SH ... .
OTOH, one does not need to amputate the feet of any adults getting in the back of the SH, as one does with the SG ... :rotfl:. The rear doors of the SH are also longer than the SG.

2) The SH has got more ground clearance than the SG to start with. Around 20 mm more, IIRC. Perhaps less need for any lift?

3) After the MY10 model, the SH lost the SportsShift auto (I think ... ); and also the EJ-253 engine. The later model SH's had the FB engine. Personally, I think that the last of the EJ N/A series engines - the EJ-253 - is a better sorted engine than the FB engine in many small ways.

4) From what I have observed, the SH is probably a bit safer car than the SG, after one has hit something ... . It has the very important structural differences of having the "hooks" at the rear edge of the bonnet that lock it down in a front end stack; and also has the door frame bolts at the bottom of the rear doors. My SG hasn't got either of these.
The SH also has side curtain airbags as well as the front side impact bags - i.e. 6 in total vs 4 in total. The side curtain airbags in the SH protect heads in the rear seats as well. Both have the active head rests.
The SH also has VDC on top of the EBD and ABS in the SG.
OTOH, I don't think that our SH handles quite as well as my SG ... Not quite as stable, as distinct from grip. Still far better than our old Camry - but a subtle difference between the SH and SG.

Just a few thoughts. Happy New Year, and good hunting.

Pokeabout, If that torque figure is legit that would have to be the most powerful Diesel subaru in the world?

Even some of the work EE20Diesel boys have done in the states with big turbos and removing and porting out cylinder heads and intake manifolds are slightly below those figures. You must have dropped some coin on your beast congrads.

Just watch the gearbox and clutch. The limit of the factory clutch is about 405nm of torque and as the MRT boys found out the limit of the actual 6spd subaru diesel gearbox is about 430-440nm of torque i think they've broken two on their race car now.

Thanks RB.
As said, SG's seem to be going [or at least asking] for high money up to and over the same car in a SH.
Good news about the height. From memory a Hi-lux is 220mm.
If I get a SH may still consider a legal lift in the future.
Engine guard first though.
regards

no problem

Gidday Ratbag, I eventually bought a 05 Outback to tow the little van. The chancellor of the exchequer liked the comfort.
