jf1sf5's forester

I bought my '97 Foz in 2002, second hand with 90'000 km.

The first year, I changed the OEM springs for Dobinsons, the wheels and tires, 1 inch lift blocks and a 8 mm thick aluminum sump guard after a big dent in the sump but no hole !

The rear Dobinsons were too hard, changed them for SF springs on SG self leveling struts.

In 2006, I wanted to go further with the mods and prepared the Foz for a saharian trip to Morocco, fitted some BFG AT's, Quaife front diff, rear SG LSD diff, SG disc brakes and larger SG rear track.

In october 2007, ready for the trip, drove about 1'500 km on very sandy/rocky trails and corrugations that blew the rubber of the rear top hats but drove back home with pieces of truck tires (no Subarus in Morocco !)

2010, bought some second hand Proflex evo2 coil overs that were made for the Forester engaged by Bruno Picard for the 2008 Dakar rally...cancelled.

2012, changed the BFG AT for General Grabber AT, as good or better off road with less noise on road, with Compomotive 16x7 ET30 wheels.

And discovered "www.offroadsubarus.com" that helps me modify my Foz !

2013, 1,59:1 low range, DCCD and rear Quaife diff because after some readings, I think the helical diffs suit my needs better (rain, snow)

Pics to come but I'm no good with computers !

I bought the basic version (manual) DCCDpro controller…Its most often in 35/65 torque split but on snowy roads I set it halfway on the thumbwheel which is about a 42/58 torque split and when off road, I lock it 50/50 as soon as needed…if I don't forget !

From my experience, the 50/50 torque split is better on very steep inclines, otherwise, the rear wheels spin quite a lot or want to come in front !

I have the auto version of the DCCDPro controller, but I think for Forester's the manual version would be fine. With the auto one, you splice into the TPS and handbrake warning light circuits- I imagine with the manual one this is not the case? How do you get a readout of the torque split? Did you get the dash from the STI as well?

On the manual controller, you only have the thumbwheel and you have to "feel" the torque split but for my use, its more than adequate !

Next mods to come are :

-EJ22 swap

-Hotbits long stroke custom made coil overs

-Heri Subaru HD axles

Just waiting on the axles to start the work...

Vince, I think I've got something you're looking for. PM me, I'm Nick, Mark's friend.

Ok, here's some stats on the the Heri HD 22200 axle (02-07 Impreza). There seems to be at least one guy out there who removed the tone ring on them and is using these in the 22276 application then. It doesn't seem obvious how it would be removed, but it might pry off or need to be ground off.

Compressed length: 22 inches (flange to flange)
Weight 15.5 lbs

As it came boxed:

Overall shot, it came with an axle nut and roll pin with it too.

Inboard:

Outboard:

A little over 27mm diameter

A little over 49mm diameter on the thick inboard end.

And now some shots for you to look at and compare to other cars to see if you can make this axle work for you (the 22276 is out of stock at AAP and they don't know when it will be back in stock)
~9mm

~16mm

~82mm

~72.5mm

~56mm

A shot with a scale.

I made a custom box to fit 4 Heri HD 22200 axles. I'll measure it up tomorrow and get a firm shipping number to you. Almost on the way.

Ok, I'm going to have to do some weight reduction on the package.

It's right around that 67-69 pound range right now. If I get it to 66 then it is almost half the cost.

67 pounds is $356, 66 pounds is $178. Time to trim the fat!

Edit, scratch that, The package is at 72 pounds now. I'll try, but I don't think I'm getting 6 pounds of packaging out of this. Might have to do two smaller shipments.

Further Edited to add: Yep, not going to be able to do 66 pounds for all 4. I would have to take the axles out of their boxes, tape them together and hope. I'll move on to making two separate packages that will ensure they will arrive undamaged. Man, didn't think I would be spending this much time just on boxing them up.

Sorry for the time spent on boxing the axles…and thank you very much for everything.

My last video from Valloire in the french alps on a 4x4 track. Doesn't seem tough but a few big fourbies didn't manage the whole track…even lifted and with big muddy tires !

Looking as big fun Vincent! I see that you are running general AT3's. I have to replace my at2's in a few months. Are the at3 good? What size are you using?

Hotbits coilovers? :iconwink:

Personally I don't like all that back tyre rubbing inside the guard

Nice Video by the way:banana:

The tires are the General AT's in 215 70 16

The rubbing comes from the screws holding the mud flaps…I'll have to put some flat ones !

I still have the Proflex coilovers but the swap is imminent, the EJ22 is out of the Legacy and I will soon receive the Heri HD axles, need them for even more articulation...
