I guess Optus is the only real 2nd choice and it's good there is competition. I find their ads a bit misleading although they are correct...cover 98% of the population or something like that which sounds cool except for where that 98% live!!
In reality Telstra has done a great job in my opinion. The size of the country compared to the population...and still people moan and complain.
Anyway....it appears if i want to do it than i either by the unit off Telstra for $299 or sign up for a new plan and pay $48 outright...which is the way i would go, but i get a good deal now so if i ended up paying more each month i am probably not interested.
I'll have a chat with the shop next week.
 
Yup. All the telcos do that - quote % of population not % of geographic cover. It is annoying but probably inevitable.

I absolutely agree with you that Telstra has done a great job with their mobile network. To be fair, they were able to do that because they were able to milk their fixed line monopoly for cashflow and spent practically nothing on the cable-in-ground side of things where there was no competition from Optus or Vodafail. But just having the money isn't the same thing as having the money and successfully designing and building a new network. You can't just plan, you have to execute the plan - and Telstra did. By and large, their mobile system works pretty well.

And, since they got rid of the odious Sol, sold their old copper network to the NBN, and accepted that they would have to compete for customers now the same as any other telco, they have done really, really well. Their customer service, which was appalling in Sol's day, has improved incredibly. They still have a way to go, but I reckon they have gone well past the Optus standard (and in any case Optus has gone backwards in recent years) and are now actually pleasant to deal with. (Mostly.) I simply cannot imagine saying that about the Telstra of 5 or 10 years ago. Even their pricing has moderated.
 
That's pretty well right. Best thing they ever did was send Sol packing back to the US or wherever he came from. He was a bit like Bush..just wanted to wage war and bugger the result.
I agree with the customer service bit totally. It has improved out of sight. I would go as far as to say that it almost a pleasure to deal with them.:ebiggrin:
