Hi all, new to the forum and wondering if you all could help me out with a question?

I have a 2012 Forester Diesel. Just got Pedders heavy duty springs both front and rear which has lifted the car about 25mm.

I am now looking to buy so AT tyres for it but I want them on the standard 225/55R17 rims. I have done extensive research and to get AT tyres on the standard wheels I think I need to go slightly bigger? From all of my research there are no 225/55R17 AT tyres out there?

So my question is......... Will a set of 235/60R17 tyres fit nicely without any rubbing or scrubbing?

I really want a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's. They make them in 235/60R17. I am a massive Coopers fan and I don't really want any other tyres. Although I have looked at Dunlop and Pirelli, but they simply don't offer what Coopers can.

Any thoughts?

Cooper Discoverer AT3 Catastrophic Failure

Well my mom called me in a panic this morning. She'd suffered a blowout in the 02 suburban on the way to the airport. So I changed out of my work clothes, threw on some jeans and went out there. I expected a nail in the tire or something. But this is what I discovered:

I've never seen a sidewall tread separation in person like this. Hopefully I can get them to honor a warranty and get a new wheel out of the deal. A quick internet search hasn't turned up many hits for failures on these.

Any one have any problems with these or have experience getting tire failures replaced under warrantee?
Sorry man but i saw this post before it got scrubbed off the fullsizechevy.com site and before i saw your post. I'm pretty sure this dude ran this tire at half pressure but it looks bad.

Hi mate, I've got a 2012 diesel with a 35mm lift via strut spacers + 1inch rear subframe spacers to re centre the rear wheel.

I have 225/60r17 yokohama AT/S at tyres fitted to the stock rims. I'd save that without the subfarme spacers with your lift and 235/60r17 tyres you will get some rubbing at full extension of the rear suspension.

Did you have to replace the air shocks in the rear when you got the pedders springs?

I'm waiting to see a set of 235/60r17 cooper at3s on an SH Forester. They are 28.3 inches in diameter.

Hi guys, thanks for the info. Pigsti, I wouldn't worry about the blowout of the tyre, cooper discoverer's have a 60,000km warranty and they will replace that and probably your rim for sure!

Biesel, no I didn't have to replace the standard shocks as the pedders springs havn't lifted it too far. Any further and yeah I would be looking at new shocks.

So maybe the Coopers won't work then? Hmmmmm I might just go with the Geolandar AT's then? They do come in better sizes.

I'll still investigate the coopers and see if they will fit. If they do work i'll get pics on here asap, haha.

Thanks guys.

the 235/60r17 will fit if you fit rear subframe spacers to re centre the rear wheels after the lift.

Also be aware though that even just going from 225/55 to 225/60 I noticed a loss in power! and my diesel is chipped.

I ran Cooper tyres on my Pajero for years and swear by them. I reckon that one in the picture was driven on whilst flat and totally destroyed.
Around this area the AT3 is very popular.

I've got Cooper LifeLiners on the road alloys and have got just under 50K kms on them so far. I would consider AT3's on the steelies for dirt work. I saw that blow out pic when searching for a mud tyre!

I just ordered an AT3 235/60r17 for test fitting. Pictures coming soon. 2013 Forester XT(SH).

Here are the pictures...

1. Rear wheel well, front of the tire very close to the plastic piece that hides a pinch weld. At full extension the treads barely touch that piece, the wheel still spins freely.

2. Rear quarter view.

3. Left front, when turning the wheel the tire almost touches the front fender lining. This was the only clearance issue on the front tire.

4. Left front strut clearance. This was the part I was most worried about. Not an issue.

5. Left front view. This tire looks great on a Fozzie.

Let me know if you have any questions. I only bought one tire because I didn't want to have return a set of tires if they didn't fit. I will be getting the full set next month, I'll have better pictures then with my DSLR. I hate phone cameras but that was all I had on me.

More pictures...

1. Front strut clearance

2. Front tire side view

3. Rear tire clearance on bumper side

I cannot wait to get the rest of the tires and go mud bogging.

Front will be no issue, people have bigger tyres fitted to SH fozzies. the issues come in the rear at full extension on lifted cars. When you fitted a foz the rear tyre moves forward further in the guard. there's plenty of guys on subaruforester.org running 225/70r16 and 225/65r17 tyres. just requires some plastic trimming and sub frame spacers.

This was the first time I've seen in person the movement of the rear suspension and why there are clearance issues with bigger tires. So the rear suspension extends towards the front of the car at an angle.

It looks like I'll be getting subframe spacers when I do a lift. I guess I'll have to live with 9.7 inches of ground clearance for now.

Nice work on the pics of the Coopers types mate. I'm gonna get me some for sure. As for the pedders springs, the car basically looks no different, just got less sag when towing which is what I wanted. The only downside is the pedders springs are a little stiffer so I have had to sacrifice a bit of ride comfort. Otherwise I would highly recommend them.

Machine1, so what you are saying is, that on a stock foz with no lift at all, those coopers will fit without any rubbing or any probs? By the way they look AWESOME!
