Removed the din pocket and put it under the stereo, bought a second hand dash piece from the wreckers to cut into as well. the din width on the SF forester isn't quiet as wide as the standard

thank you idw, what another goodies you got there? i was thinking of going to a din size uhf but not sure i could remove the pocket easily. Your set up looks good tho

the radio and din pocket are held onto a harness with two screws each, really easily removed once the dash piece is off. just unscrew it and screw the uhf in its place, I've seen alot of people install uhf's in the ash tray holder, and with units where everything is on the mic just drill a small hole somewhere and mount the unit under the dash with the mic's wire comming out a small hole. the other goodie is a 20amp 12volt line for my inverter

99 foz

Here is the radio

And here is the aerial;

Not the best place for the aerial but seems to get pretty good range considering.

I've got mine mounted here & found that useless (until now) pocket to keep the mic in :)

Yep, it's in the ash tray; that's just the head unit.

my mates is the same place as MR T, mine was mounted under the passenger seat and velcro onto the floor. i then had extended mic cable and a larger speaker install. was great could hear it clear and was out of the way for thieves and my passengers knees

Not my exact set up but the same install. Was inspired by this shot as I already had the double DIN frame and cover. It's the best set up as you can quickly remove it to like nothing was there afterwards.

thank you guys for your info. i liked a few of your options, now just to buy the right size uhf for the place i want to install.

Double DIN

I've got an '03 Forester and have the double DIN as well - it's great!
Can post pic if you want.

GME Antenna mounted on old SubaXtreme nudge bar.

I use a 5W Icom handheld UHF in my car and on my bike when I go touring. I mounted an external antenna on the front wing/bonnet area with a Z bracket, then ran coax through the car so the end pops out in the centre console armrest/box just behind the handbrake.

So if I want the radio in the car I just drop it in the arm rest box, connect the external antenna, plug a battery eliminator into the cig lighter socket inside the box, plug a speaker mic into the socket on the side of the radio, drop the mic in the cup holder and close the lid. Easy! And for bike touring I just whack the standard flexi antenna on and drop the radio in my tank bag.

Two radios for the price of one

Anyone tried mounting a small UHF into the sunglasses holder above our head? Not sure about Sh but SFs and SG have one as far as I'm aware!

Thanks! I was having a look at your setup earlier! That's my next option, I'll see if I can figure out an over head mount :) otherwise I'll go with your way!

^ These things generate a LOT of heat, SF. Considering that I don't even keep my driving glasses in the sun glass holders because they get too hot up there, it might not be a good idea to put your micro UHF there.

There's also no air space to dissipate the heat from the bloody great heat sink on the back, and the difficulty of the antenna feed and switched power.

If you can figure out how to get round these things, go for it! People here are always achieving unlikely things ... :poke:  .

Oh yes! I didn't think of that, thankyou!!
