Attn: Outback BH (99-03, EJ25 SOHC) Drivers + Libs/Imps

I'd like to open this up to all 99-04 Subaru's.. Anyone get similar issues to this (even if they are minor) in any Subaru built in this time?

I'm trying to determine what the root cause of the issue is. My thoughts are it is the ECU. But I'm wondering if it is the feedback the IAC vavle gives to the ECU. See, I'm having trouble believing it is only the ECU because it is progressively getting worse.

I could always buy a new ECU and new IAC to prove that it is or is not these, but I don't have the money to potentially through away.

Thanks so far.

I have not. But I highly doubt they would follow up my issue with a 14yo car.

Worth a try though I suppose!

It's just hard to explain the problem in simple terms, especially when I know the two only possible offending parts. Companies tend not to like it when I explain something with understanding and knowledge.

I don't have the first problem (sensitive throttle, jumping to 1700rpm) but have certainly on occasion felt the cyclical surging on light throttle, usually when going downhill as you describe. I think the effect (and discomfort) is exacerbated by the amount of backlash inherent in the drive line as it clunks between acceleration and overrun.

I don't recall having felt it for a while - maybe I've sub-consiously learned to drive around it or have just got used to it. I'll try to replicate it again and report back.

I can no longer replicate the surging on light throttle. I'm pretty sure that this was cleared up, along with some other issues (uneven acceleration), when I replaced the front oxygen (A/F) sensor a couple of years ago.

I did not feel any surging before changing DMF to SMF and HD clutch, but it is rarely happens. Mine is manual, built 10/00. BTW I dont have the sensitive throttle problem.

Cheers,

I believe the surging is a different problem now. I need to do more logging while driving to see..

Is yours the electronic throttle?

I don't know how the throttle is connected to the ECU, but could it be one of these components that's dead or dying? e.g. throttle position sensor (if there is such a thingy ... :iconwink: - sorry about the technical jargon :rotfl:).

Fly by wire has to have something that tells the wire what value it should have ...

G'day again Phiz

You have my sympathy, mate.

As you know, I do computer troubleshooting for a living, even though now semi-retired. This sort of thing can be just plain bloody frustrating.

Good luck!!

Its some what like troubleshooting an old Mac. You can see the problem, but there is no way to apply a fix to it. Maybe it is time it gets "boat anchored"
