So I'm buying new shoes for the foz and I want people's opinion on which to go for. I was going to go the 215/70r16 Toyo A/T's on the black 16" steelies I've got but I know the mrs is going to whinge if I ditch the mags, so now I'm considering going to a 225/65r17 and keeping the mags.
There is only 0.12 of an inch difference in diameter so the only real difference comes down to the amount of sidewall I've got and how common the size is (ie: tyre choice).

90% of its life it will see Tarmac and road pressures, I'll only be letting the pressures down if I start to bog down in the sand. Since I started pulling the abs fuse its fixed most of my problems with getting stuck so after I fit the 50mm lift and solve my clearance issues I don't see myself getting stuck a whole lot.

I won't be buying new wheels any time soon so I'm stuck with the 16" foz steelies or the factory SH9 XT 17" mags. What's your opinions?

^ I'd be going with the steelies and 215/70R16's mate.. I'd also go with the Yokohama Geolander AT-S as they are a good compromise offroad tyre, grip pretty well onroad and wear well.
I had them in a 215/70R15 and got 50,000km from them with 10-15k of that offroad.

That size could be hard to get on a 17" rim and would probably be expensive as the size isn't very common.

Yea I'm hearing you and ideally id be looking to get a set of 15" Audi wheels to clear the wrx 4 pot brakes I am planning to do later this year. Unfortunately I think that if I go to the 16's I'll have to buy another set of tires for the mags to keep the handbrake happy and change wheels when ever I want to go off road. ah decisions decisions decisions...

Trade in the 17" mags for 16" mags as a compromise. Bugger changing wheels 8 times to go offroading.

You might even make some coin in the trade. Try the guys on ozfoz.com.

Divorce?? Would fix the problem haha

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Why not get a set of 16" mags from an outback, they seem to be pretty common.

I'd go 225/70/16 in Yokohama Geolander AT-s, a great compromise for on/off road

like everyone said a set of 16" alloys would be the go. BUT if you had to compromise I would go with the 16" steelies.
I've heard really good things on the toyo open country AT as a few of my mates had them on there hilux's. they seem to wear better then the yokohama's and are generally cheaper.
I also suggest the general grabber at2. my mate has them on his 4by and said for the price they are the best tyre he's had. they also come in your size.

A bloke on the forester offroad facebook page just got 235/65r17 fitted to his stock mags. just had to trim the plastic in the rear wheel arch similar to fitting 225/70r16s.

it was an sh foz btw.

Yea I really like the look of the Toyo open country A/T's. My mate has a set of open country M/T's on his patrol and says they are the best value for money MT he has run yet, he's getting good mileage out of them so I think the A/T's are worth a try.

I'm going to the tyre place on Monday to discuss my options and see what they have in stock because I need tyres before I travel to Mackay.

Chuck up some pics when you've got them on. Maybe they'll let you test fit a set of 225/6517 or even 235/65r17. unlikely they'll have them in stock though. those small sizes wouldn't be ordered alot.

I wonder what you guys think about the Cooper AT3, its quite new in Europe so no feedbacks yet, but it has more meat than the General AT I have now.

For the price of 4 coopers you can nearly buy 6 Mickey Thompson MTZ's which will last longer, wont chip out, are awesome in the sand and are by far the best mud tyre I've ever seen. My mate got 70,000kms out of his MTZ's on his 100 series before they were at the legal limit, my brother replaces his MTZ's at about half tread and is getting between 30-40,000km's

MTZ's wont fit a foz though:(. I'm considering cooper at3's to replace the yoko at/s when they wear out. only because i can get cooper at3 in 235/60r17 where as i have to step up to 225/65r17 to go bigger in the yoko's currently using them at 225/60r17. will have to cut away plastic to fit 225/65r17. should be able to fit 235/60r17 with no mods as overall size will only go up 6mm according to my calcs.

My mate who loves coopers recently told me the same thing that coopers make micky t's i never looked into it.

Silverstone make a 215/75r16 mud terrain mt-117ex, I'm sure a man of your talents could make that fit brumby. There are a few SG foz's with them.
