Hows the Heat / Weather treating everyone ?

You will not hear of these temperatures because it is mandatory for all work to cease at 50 degrees.

Some countries have mandatory closures of schools, etc, at 30C :rotfl:

Now lets just say that coal mines do not stop if it can be helped so all thermometers go missing at 46 degrees, how do I know, I was management.

But I thought mining companies were scrupulously ethical? It always seems so on the ads they produce!:raspberry:

How can you say official records are use less then claim your own record to be true then the next bloke claims reading temps in the high 60's...

Next you'll say don't bother watching the olympics the bloke down the road runs the 100m sprint in 2 seconds flat.... :P i recorded it on my super accurate casio g shock.

You have to remember that the temperature for the area is checked at one singular point in that location, just because the official gauges read a particular temp it does not mean it is not 3 degrees hotter 2km down the road, I had to know the correct temp because I used to deal with storage and transportation of explosives, believe me humidity and temperature are highly relevant.

I used to work in central qld, I can tell you for certain that the 50.7 has been beaten on many occasion and mid to high 40's is fairly normal through the coal fields. You will not hear of these temperatures because it is mandatory for all work to cease at 50 degrees. Now lets just say that coal mines do not stop if it can be helped so all thermometers go missing at 46 degrees, how do I know, I was management. The worst part about anything above 40 degrees in a coal mine is the ground is usually black and we have taken readings where ground temp has been high 60's which then in turn heats up the soles of your boots. Plus I remember 7 years ago having Christmas lunch and the mercury hit 52.5. Needless to say it was hot

Which is why there is a need for fearless worker elected OH&S Representatives who are prepared to expose such abuses of safety standards and rigorously utilise their powers under OH&S legislation.

Coal mines might 'not stop if it can be helped ' when it is just puting the safety of workers at risk... however 'management' are happy to close mines down in the middle of enterprise negotiations and then re-open them later with contract labour, as per the scam that was tried at one mine in Queensland last year.

Not wanting to start a 'flame war' on this topic, but what you have said really just confirms my experience of 'management' in general ... i.e. 'rules' mean whatever it suits the bosses for them to mean at the time.

^ Quite, Kevin.

Very glad that the telescopes at Coonabarabran didn't go the same way as those at Mt Stromlo. The loss of the completed 6df camera and the historic Yerkes refractor at Stromlo was very bad. Let alone many people's homes ...

I remember as all that unfolded. The NSW fire services offered to help the Canberra fire services 4-5 days before Stromlo burned, and were told by the Canberra fire services that they didn't need any help, thank you very much ... NOW, Canberra is trying to blame the NSW fire services for what happened!! Whatever happened to truth?

Canberra trying to blame someone else for their rooster ups? Must be something in the air....

Was at Coonabarabran with the kids a couple of years back, fires in that country would be effectively 'impossible' to control.
In the case of Mt Stromlow there has been at least one inadvertant 'positive' outcome. The Great Melbourne Reflector telescope has returned 'home' and is in the process of being restored.

^ Gidday Barry

That's true.

The instrument is being (has been?) restored by the Astronomical Society of Victoria.

A tragedy for history that the Yerkes refractor and the 6df camera were destroyed.

However, I just cannot believe the incompetence of both the federal government and the Mt Stromlo observatory staff and (re-)designers of the facility that allowed this to occur. SOME of the windows were fire protected ... :( :shake:  :puke:

I agree, just so you know I did not work for the mines, I was a contractor and all my guys were stood down at the correct temps. I took my job seriously and what I was dealing with the rules were cut and dry.
I left because I could not deal with the hypocritical rules that certain companies ran by, I got put through the wringer for keeping staff safe. I refused to "conform" to the way things were done. The coal mining act is breached on every mine every day by everyone.
To be honest the last environment I was in like that was primary school.

Trust me you do not want to hear my true opinion on all parties involved in the mines I was involved with.

^ Sounds reasonable to me, Thunder .

I have a blood test tomorrow which will interfere with my pool time ... (can't go in the pool for several hours after the test). At least I have (finally) managed to get the pool water back in balance, and scrubbed off the dreaded black spot algae; fixed the Kreepy Krauly; etc. So looks less like a duck pond, and more like a swimming pool ...

Sydney's hottest day on record!

Today is now Sydney's hottest day on record, causing train delays and a spate of heat exposure emergencies across the city.

Sydney's Observatory Hill observed a temperature of 45.8C at 2.55pm as records continued to tumble across the city's suburbs.

That's 114.4F :surprised:

It was 45.7 at my place when I got home this arvo. Now 41.2 and still 30 inside with the a/c on; methinks another jump in the pool is in order!

All I can say is "It was officially :censored: hot !!" today

We reached 44.7C where I work today.
Then just as we hit that temp (approx 2pm) we had a fire alarm  didn't we :shake:

Thankfully it was a false alarm, but lets just say it was nice & hot when we were ushered outside, where we had to stand (& wait for the all clear) in the top car park for about 35-40mins.

And yes, you guessed it, in the sun, as they've trimmed most of the trees out there haven't they :yell::furious::mob::furious::yell:

At least it's cooled down a little now to 38.9C (5.30pm)

Sorry to hear that you guys are copping it up there.

Much cooler here today, but humid ...
My getting hot under the collar about the car servicing (while I waited, and waited, and waited, for 3 hours ... ) didn't help my state of mind one bit!

Are the telescopes at Coonabarabran OK?

Well you have to take the good with the bad I suppose.
And in saying that I can't really winge as it could be a lot worse.

At least I have air con & (still) have a roof over my head, unlike those poor people who've lost their homes in the horrific bush fires that we're having at the moment.

Regards
Mr Turbo

Well on the other side of the world we have some other weather.. It is the coldest easter ever with day temps of 4oC and night -7oC and sometimes snow. Normally it should be 12oC now... It is even colder now then with christmas over here! My garage doesn't have a heather so thermo clothing is the way to go. I know in England it's much worst, but it is so freaking cold in my garage..

When does the spring finally really starts???!!
