making skid plate, any advice?

It affects the crumple zones which theoretically affects the airbag sensors

Rigid custom skid plates may prevent the engine from dropping out from under the car in a serious prang, now that's an issue!

Similarly I'm modding up an L series plate to go on. Because it's actually an OEM part so I'm hoping that this wont be an issue.

Anybody thought of using UMHW (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) as the material for the skid plates? There are a few Ultra4 guys here in the states and weekend warrior folks using it for armor. 3/8 thick plate is rigid to withstand hard impacts on rocks, and weights less than aluminum. On my Jeep, I have 300 pounds of reinforced steel armor skids underneath, way too heavy. I'm plan on using that material to make new skids. With how light and agile the forester is, bolting on metal weight cuts down on the advantages that platform offers.

ill order another roll of quik roof to put in between the panels so the vibration doesn't drive me crazy.

I put this project off forever I just ordered the quick roof this morning and now I need to know what type of adhesive I should use to hold two pieces of aluminum together. It'll still have bolts holding it on but I wanna double it upnto hopefully make it a little stronger.

Jb weld, or tack weld along the two pieces

Not sure if I've posted this here before, but I tried a lot of things before finally just going with bent 3/16" hot rolled plate.

put some bends in it if you can like trooper Brian, makes it more rigid.

Love the umbrella corp no plate. :rotfl:

Can you get plates/protection for the fuel tank/most of the exhaust line or do you have to come up with something yourself?

Noticed a largish dent in my fuel tank last night, and the exhaust pipe is getting pretty belted up, again!

I like the look of that plate Brian, and the recovery points too.

Don't drive like an idiot and then you don't have to worry about crumble zones. The engine usually pushes down and back under your feet. The sump guard is infront of this so I wouldn't worry.
Plus if you have a huge lift kit like me you don't have to worry about the underside getting damaged. Lol

No, you'll have to make your own for the fuel tank. I wouldnt cover the exhaust as it would trap the heat in.

I was gonna try attaching some 2mm plate to the moustache bar but I havent worked out where to attach the rear end.

When I reinforced my sumpguard I was careful to only have the reinforcing running across the car, not along it. This way in a big frontal impact it will still fold.

Taza, I'm not worried bout me driving like an idiot, its others I worry about! :shake:

Good point, probably wouldn't have thought about that!

I just had the exhaust shop use slightly thicker pipe, needed to re jig a couple of exhaust hangers but worked well for me. I ripped up the exhaust when i was stuck in a hole on a track in cobaw, the 2 1/4" (cat back and high flow hotdog) sports exhaust was cheaper than replacing with standard. Still the exhaust is the lowest on point on the car, the hotdog scraps before anything else its got a fair dent in it now

I'm thinking of folding up a fuel tank guard out of alloy composite, just not sure where to mount it

i need to get a bending tool
i spend so long grinding down a front skid plate from an isuzu trooper, i finally gave up and decided to go with my original plan of making a new piece from scrap aluminum. my engine skid plate will go on tomorrow.

Pics please :iconwink::poke:

the front skid isn't done. i have my engine skid on right now, its much much thicker than before. just 2 pieces of flat aluminum plating with 2 layers of quick roof. held to subframe with some nuts and bolts. probably going to make an access panel later on cuz its heavy now so taking the whole thing off is a little more annoying.

I'm currently making one for our 06XT.
I used this plan that I think originally came from here.
I'm using 3mm alloy tread plate.

I modified this to fit as we have a ECB nudge bar that required 35mm to be trimmed off each side at the front to clear the bar.
It looks like it will fit ok once bent but I have to find a place to bend it for me. The local steel place said they wont bend tread plate as it damages the bender. You also don't need to cut out the curve on the top left of the plan if its for a XT.
