Advice? Quiet all-season highway tyre w/ some off-road?

Gidday Phil

Just a quick note to report on what I ended doing.

I opted for the Geolandar G95 225/55 R17. Turned out to the cheapest at $140 per corner, and I think it lined up with my priorities. All-season, a bit of off-road, but also a durable, highway tyre.

Geez!! That's terrific buying. That makes them even cheaper than the XM2s I bought for Roo2 (215/60 16).

As I (and SWMBO ... ) are very happy with the G95s currently on RonnyRoo, that makes for a very easy choice next time around.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks again for all the responses. It helped crystalise my thinking.

That's what I find to be so very good about this forum. I worked out within about 2 days of finding this forum that I had already got my $15 worth out of the place, so signed up as a contributing member ... :poke: :poke: hint, hint ... :rotfl:

Every little bit helps to keep the place up and running.

Interestingly, the G95 (the OEM tyre that comes on the Forrester GT?) was the only one that was so cheap. The 035 and the G900 came in at $220 a tyre. From Taleb Tyres in Sydney, if anyone cares.

Mate, thats more than sensational! :monkeydance:

In fact, I reckon they've either made a mistake or had some stock to get rid of so gave you a great deal. Either way, you bloody beauty! :lildevil::discomonkey:

IME, OEM tyres tend to be more expensive, maybe cos the tyre manufacturers know they have a regular market for those who will only ever replace their tyres with OEM, same as insurance companies.

My (ex)GF's '09 FG Falcon OEM tyres are $330 ea...for a Falcon!!

Now thats a great buy :monkeydance:
Actually it's more like a steal for that price

Well done I say, well done :bananatoast:

The G95 isn't even listed on the Yokohama website, so maybe they were a closeout? The two other shops I called (St George and Tempe) didn't have the G95 at all.

I didn't even negotiate, so I can't claim any special credit for my shopping skills.

The G95 was replaced with the G95A.
I'd be interested to know if you have the original or new one?
The price I quoted above is for the A version, which is the OEM stock tyre on current model XS and XTs.

I was going to say that must be it, as I checked my invoice and it just says "G95".

However, I just went out to the car and I found a tiny "G-95A" in about 12pt type. The big marketing type says "G95", but the fine print would seem to indicate it is the G95A.

To add further confusion, the tire is a 97V whereas Tire Rack lists the specs for the 225/55 R17 G95A as 95H.

I'm confused, but I choose to believe that I got an awesome deal on a tyre, rather than a outdated or counterfeit model. :-)

I wonder if they were stock taken from someone trading their new Geolandars in on an alternative fitment. The Geolandar G900's that came on my 07 Forester were so appaling that I would have almost paid for someone to take them off me.

The latter would seem to be a much better tyre, judging by the survey results at Tire Rack.

Interesting reading, but I have no idea how BFGs scored 3rd as a highway tyre! With a wet traction score of 9.0!!

Thats why I take those kinda surveys with a cup of salt, not a pinch lol :iconwink:

Had fun the other day when we had some rain after a hot dry spell, watching a brand new Pajero with new BFGs unable to stay in his lane through a very slow right turn arrow...top heavy with poor grip in the wet :shake:

I reckon you got the right tyres for your purpose at a price some would call a steal! :lildevil:

Ditto to that :iconwink:

Thats an interesting survey to say the least.
But what I found even more interesting is that they didn't have (as far as I could see anyway) was any feedback for the yokohama A/Ts (GO12)

I'm on my 3rd set of Michelin Energy XM1's, 70,231 kms from my last set.

For my style of driving and road use they are well suited to the Forester and they handle both wet and dry conditions really well and cornering is also great.

I have 10,480 odd kms up on the current set and aim to replace them with XM2's if I still have the Forester when the time arises.

Yeah, I'm not treating surveys at the Tire Rack as gospel or anything. Just another datapoint.

I guess I wonder why any A/T tyre should appear in a "Highway All-Season" tyre survey.
