carljwnc's '01 Outback

Just had a chance to see the pics of your new ride mate :)

It looks like it's been really looked after, thats for sure

Eh, it's alright :iconwink: I prefer YotaRu.... You going to offroad it?

What motor? 2.5 n/a or H6? Auto or Manual?

YotaRu goes down as one of my favorite vehicles EVER!!! Missing it terribly, and would have kept it if it was affordable. For getting back and forth to work and hauling the kids around, it was just time for something more comfortable and, due to lots of little things starting to worry me, more reliable.

I'm still up in the air about off roading the Outback. Another reason for getting it, is so I can pass it down to my son in four years when he starts driving. I may just leave the mods up to him.:iconwink:

Oh, and 2.5n/a with an, an, an, hard to say it.......AT:surprised: (better for off road anyway)

Looks good Carl.

Are you gonna be in the woods this weekend?
I've done alot of riding in WNC/Tn. but figure you know about some good stuff. I may have to come up and follow you around sometime. :iconwink:

Let me know if you're ever up in the area. Don't know of any 'trails' doable without a lifted Subie, but I know the gravel roads in Pisgah around here like the back of my hand.

First, and foremost mod...

Then...

Goodbye carpet floor mats.

In with the all weather floor mats from YotaRu, a little trimming and they fit just fine.:)

I did the rears too, but I wasn't going to bother with a pic. Other than that, I've just been storing and stashing things. Folding shovel in the spare tire well, paper work...etc.

Most of you probably don't know this, but YotaRu never had a functioning stereo, had one but the CD player didn't work and the OEM speakers were decayed beyond audibility, so now I have tunes!!! Got a healthy stash of CD's in there, and I even have a cassette deck which I WILL use (yes, I'm that old).

I'll agree with you for the floor mats. Nothing (in my opinion) beats the rubber ones. Especially when it come to cleaning them :iconwink:

As a matter of interest, how many miles are there on the clock ?

Great to hear you've also got a stereo that works mate. You definitely need tunes when you on a road trip thats for sure :quitar:

She's a beaut Carl! Looks like a brand new car from how well it looks to have been taken care of!

It certainly has been looked after well, and no rust on it anywhere. there was an '02 next to it with fewer miles on it, but it had a good sized rust spot on the passenger side rear fender, no thanks.

It does have a few battle scars, but nothing unexpected for having...

...140k mi. (225k km.) on the odo. Also, new head gaskets, timing belt, water pump etc. at 114k mi.

The tunes are helping with an overall carljwnc attitude adjust, a fine thing!!!:quitar:

Thought I had given away or modified all my AT shift knobs for Yota use...not so, found one the other day. Not my finest shift knob creation, but it will do for a while.

First, and foremost mod... [euro-style ORS oval sticker]

...forgot to add, I also ordered my Badge of ownership too.

Carl: Let me congratulate you again here on ORS on your new Outback! I have nothing against Yotas. As you know, I drove a 1998 diesel Land Cruiser while living in West Africa and loved it. But you in anything other than a Subaru? It just didn't feel right.

Rock on -- in a Subaru!

Thanks Escher. I am really lovin' being back in the Subie. Will be moving back to a Yota down the road though, FJ Cruiser after I pass this one down to my son.

How about going for one of the late 1970s model SWB LCs?

Nice restoration project, and if you can winch the darn thing back onto its feet, you will almost certainly be able to drive the wreck home.

They stopped making "real" 4WD vehicles when they started putting in carpets and got rid of the footwell kick open vents in LCs ... IMHO, of course.

The nearest new thing these days is a Landrover Defender ...

These are the things that "real" 4WDs are made of -

"Interior features:

As Standard with this model of

Air conditioning The recently updated climate control system is Defender's most powerful yet. The front screen defrosts and demists more quickly, cold weather warm-up is faster, and it generates more heat than ever. Additionally, the optional air conditioning cools the cabin in half the time taken by the previous model.

Cubby box
  • Driver and passenger Map Pockets
  • Rubber floor trim - Front & Rear"
:lildevil: Love it!!

Whelp, not dead set on anything yet. When the time comes, I've got a list of things that I want already done to it...and who knows, when that time comes, I may not even get a 4x4 at all...:)

^ Carl, quick question. How did your 4Runner (Hilux surf or what ever the toyota wagon was you had called in the US) go offroad? Been working with a few at work and I quite like them. Wouldn't mind one as my next offroader.. :P

It really did very well. Mine was box stock with the exception of the skid plate I had and it went plenty of places that not even a modified Subie would go. My biggest complaint was the fuel tank sticking out like a sore thumb, I had to be extra careful of it at times, I do think they remedied that on the newer (95+) models. Sometimes it would take me a few more attempts at things my diff locked buddies would walk right up, but over all I was very pleased with it's capabilities. Also, very well supported by the aftermarket, so plenty of room for improvement.

^ What was it like to drive onroad as a daily driver? Did yours have the 3.0l V6..

Wasn't bad for a high mileage truck (the Subie is easier, and much more comfortable), quite a bit of cabin noise, even though everything was in pretty good shape it had a bit of steering slop.

I did have the 3.0l V6, if I was doing it over again, I would look pretty hard for a 4 cylinder. V6 is a PITA to work on, I would gladly give up a little power for the ease of maintenance. Averaged around 18mpg which I think should be pretty good compared to other similar vehicles, and you certainly want an MT, ATs can drop you to around 13-14mpg.

I have to agree with you there Carl.....the FJ is a tempting beastie. The only thing stopping me is an inherent loyalty to Fozzes. If Subie haven't put out a car that is a logical step forward by the time I need to replace mine (24 months away) I'll have to go Toyo. I reckon it looks great in red, blue or yellow.

^I don't mind the green, but I promised myself my next car would be light coloured, so I think the "sand" is a better bet on the FJ...
